2022 Ferrari F171: what is it?
Well, for a start it won’t be called the F171, that’s just a codename. But what we do know is this is the first Ferrari to use a V6 engine since the 1956 Dino.
It’s also a hybrid and represents the start of Ferrari’s journey to make good on its pledge that 60% of its cars will be electrified by 2022.
The new engine, which we explain more about below, will also make its way into the Ferrari Purosangue SUV.
The F171 is a mid-engined two-seat supercar that will be rear-wheel drive only and go up against cars like the McLaren Artura.
While the test mule you see here proves the car is nearly ready, albeit nameless, the exhaust pipes on show are actually fake and hiding the real pipes which are in the middle of the car.
There are still a number of body panels added to disguise the final design: even so it’s clear the F171 will be a good looking thing. Is it just us or does it have a whiff of the Maserati MC20 about it?
There’s plenty of speculation that Ferrari could resurrect the Dino nameplate too, but this so far is being vehemently denied by Maranello.
2022 Ferrari F171: what is it powered by?
As we mentioned, this is the first V6 engine to make its way into a Ferrari since the Dino in the 1950s, but unlike the Dino this one gets some electrical assistance. The combustion component is a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged unit, an engine that will be closely related to the one found in Maserati's MC20.
The electric motor will help negate turbo lag and add extra low-end shove, and while Ferrari hasn’t revealed any figures but it’s expected power could be as high as 700bhp. And all of it sent to the back wheels.
The expected electric range is only around 15-20 miles, although that’s enough for most commutes…if you’re lucky enough to commute to work in a Ferrari.
2022 Ferrari F171: when will it be on sale?
The Ferrari F171 will be revealed in full 24/6/2021 with preorders being taken immediately after. We’d expect to see the first examples of Ferrari’s first V6 since the Dino hit the road before the end of 2021 or early 2022. In the meantime, Ferrari has highlighted that this will be one of its most engaging cars to drive while teasing fans with an audio clip.
2022 Ferrari F171: how much will it cost?
The F171 will sit above cars like the Ferrari Roma and Portofino but below the powerhouse that is the SF90, so we expect prices to be around the £200,000 mark. Not the sort of cash you find down the back of the sofa.
