Update: ‘U.S. Production’ sub-section of ‘Production’ updated.
The rumored Genesis eGV70 made its world debut as the Genesis Electrified GV70 at the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2021. The mid-size electric SUV from the Hyundai Motor Group-owned luxury automaker is its third EV after the Electrified G80 and the GV60.
In Europe, the Electrified GV70 will compete with models such as the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes EQC, which are also conversions of thermal-engined vehicles. In the United States, the all-electric Genesis GV70 would rival the Tesla Model Y and the Audi Q4 e-tron when it eventually takes the trip from S.Korea. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Genesis electric car:
Exterior
The Genesis Electrified GV70 won’t attract double takes as it stays close to the ICE variant with minimal design changes. The fascia makes use of an aerodynamic crest featuring an inverted G-Matrix pattern to stress the electric SUV’s mission for sustainability. This faux radiator grille hides the vehicle’s charging port. The side air inlets in the front bumper are smaller, and the lower air intake has an understated appearance.

On the sides, the Electrified GV70 sports exclusive 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the Electrified GV70 skips the GV70’s grilles and vertically positioned tailpipes on the bumper. The body-colored, simpler design gives a cleaner styling to the electric SUV.
The body color of the all-electric SUV you see in the images here is Atacama Copper Matte. In South Korea, customers can pick from the following exterior paint options:
- Cardiff Green
- Carbon Metal
- Uyuni White
- Vik Black
- Royal Blue
- Mauna Red
- Barossa Burgundy
- Matterhorn White (matt)*
- Melbourne Gray (matt)*
- Brunswick Green (matt)*

Korean media reaction
The Electrified GV70 was on display at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show held between November 25, 2021, and December 5, 2021. YouTube channel 비피디 BPD was in attendance and shared many observations in a walkaround. It said that the Electrified GV70 looks super clean and feels more luxurious (than the GV70). Here, we get a close look at the closed-off upper grille, which lends the front-end a cleaner look compared to the GV70. YouTube channel CAR Sawyoung’s walkaround also mentions the refined exterior as a highlight of the Electrified GV70. Unlike on the GV70, the vertical side air inlets are not too big, it notes.
Interior
The interior design of the Genesis Electrified GV70 is no different from its ICE donor model. The electric SUV features a prominent three-spoke steering wheel and a dual-tone dashboard.

Genesis says that it has lowered the GV70’s center tunnel in the all-electric variant to offer an equivalent amount of second-row space. The Electrified version comes with features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, Ergo Motion front seats, 14.5-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Augmented Reality navigation, and fingerprint recognition. However, the upholstery and inserts would differ, with the pure electric variant getting cruelty-free, recycled, and sustainable materials.
In South Korea, Genesis offers the interior in three different color schemes: Fine Grove (two-tone), Glacier White (two-tone), and Black (monotone).
Specifications
Power & Torque
The Genesis Electrified GV70 comes exclusively in all-wheel drive, with both axles having a propulsion motor. Each motor generates 160 kW (214 hp) and 350 Nm (258 Lb.-Ft.), resulting in total power and total torque of 320 kW (429 hp) and 700 Nm (516 Lb.-Ft.), respectively. A boost mode is available in the GV70 EV, and it increases the powertrain’s maximum power to 360 kW (483 hp). Like the Electrified G80, the Electrified GV70 features a new type of (electric) Dynamic Torque Vectoring or eDTVC, which optimally distributes the torque between each wheel using braking force and motor driving force when making a turn.
The above and other details mentioned in this section apply to the global model. Information about the U.S.-spec Electrified GV70 will be available closer to launch.
Acceleration
On engaging the Boost mode and unlocking the maximum output, a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint takes only 4.2 seconds. A model-specific called Integrated Electric Booster (IEB) feature enables regenerative braking, reducing energy consumption and dependence on the brakes. The driver can select from two brake modes as per their preference: Comfort and Sport.
The Electrified GV70 is the first Genesis model featuring an SUV-specific ‘e-Terrain’ mode, to allow stability in various environments. E-Terrain consists of three sub-modes: snow, sand, and mud.
Genesis says that it has increased the GV70’s body rigidity by 24% for its zero-emission Electrified variant. This change should give better protection to passengers and vehicle components. Image Source: Hyundai Motor Group
Battery & Range
A 77.4 kWh battery pack is standard in the Electrified GV70, and it offers a range of 400 km (249 miles) as per the Korean EV certification system, and over 500 km in the Chinese CLTC system. The combined energy efficiency rating as per the Korean EV certification system is 4.6 km/kWh (2.9 mi/kWh).
Charging
Genesis has applied a 400-volt/800-volt multi-quick charging system that supports various charging infrastructures. This system uses the electric powertrain and inverter to boost the 400-volt voltage supplied from the charger to 800 volts.
Customers will be able to use a 350 kW rapid charger to charge the battery pack from 10% to 80% capacity in just 18 minutes. A V2L feature is available to supply up to 3.6 kW of power from the battery pack.
DAS & ANC-R
The Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) of the Electrified GV70 can automatically connect/disconnect the motor and driveshaft as per the driving conditions. Genesis has equipped it with Smart Regenerative Braking System, which takes driving habits, real-time navigation information, and road conditions into consideration while regenerating energy. One-pedal driving is possible in the new electric SUV with what Genesis calls i-Pedal (Intelligent Pedal). The inclusion of Active Noise Control-Road (ANC-R) also makes the driving experience comfortable.

Production
Hyundai Motor Group was scheduled to begin mass production of the Genesis GV70 EV in February 2022 in Ulsan, South Korea, as per a report from Korean website Moneys.
U.S. Production
Background
On May 13, 2021, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it plans to invest USD 7.4 billion to produce EVs in the U.S. by 2025 and that it will start EV production in 2022.
The Electrified GV70 would be the first U.S.-built Genesis model and also Hyundai Motor Group’s first U.S.-built EV across brands, Korea Economic Daily said in an exclusive report on November 3, 2021. The U.S. production will take place at the Alabama plant, beginning in early 2022, claimed the report. With the Electrified GV70 coming to the Alabama plant, the U.S. production of the Hyundai Sonata could come to an end, as per the report. We assumed that Canada would also get the GV70 EV from the American factory.
A report The Korea Herald published on November 23, 2021, suggested that HMG no longer plans to make its first EV in the U.S. from this year. Euisun Chung, Chairman, HMG, told reporters on November 22, 2021, that while U.S. EV production is still in the planning, 2022 won’t be the year it begins. “Not starting next year, but we are planning to (make EVs in the U.S.), so still looking for a timing,” Chung commented.
The plan to make EVs in the U.S. hit a roadblock late last year because of the new proposed incentive worth USD 4,500 on EVs that indirectly aims to promote EVs of only domestic (American) automakers. The House Ways and Means Committee has proposed that customers buying locally-built plug-in vehicles (incl. BEVs) be eligible for a USD 4,500 tax credit. If implemented, the total federal EV incentive in the country would increase to USD 12,500. However, the new incentive wouldn’t work in favor of foreign automakers like HMG that don’t employ a unionized workforce.
Jose Munoz finds the U.S. EV production announced in May 2021 “questionable,” as the USD 4,500 tax credit under discussion would create a disparity for foreign automakers like itself. Munoz is Hyundai’s Global Chief Operating Officer and also the President and CEO of its North American division. Toyota and Honda have also opposed the potential incentive, deeming it biased.
For the moment, Genesis Motor North America maintains that “more information on North American market specifications and deliveries (of the Electrified GV70) will be available at a later date.”
Latest development
Hyundai Motor Company recently held a meeting of employees at the Asan plant in South Korea where it discussed future production plans, as per a report from The Korean Car Blog. The company will start making the Electrified GV70 in the U.S. from the end of 2022, as per the report. The company probably chose the Electrified GV70 as its first electric model for U.S. production on the back of the sales success of the ICE GV70 that went on sale in America in June 2021. The U.S. production of the Electrified GV70 will take place at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant in Montgomery, Alabama.
Local manufacturing could help Genesis price the Electrified GV70 competitively in the U.S. and make it the volume model. The luxury brand is striving to grow its presence stateside with new launches. According to a report from Automotive News, Genesis tripled its U.S. sales to 49,621 vehicles in 2021. That’s roughly 36% of the South Korean luxury brand’s global sales volume (138,756 units) for the year.
The expanding charging infrastructure is likely to significantly boost EV sales in the U.S. in the next three years. On November 5, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a USD 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that would lead to a solid ramp-up of charging infrastructure. USD 7.5 billion would go into installing new EV charging stations.
Retail in the U.S.
Genesis has been capitalizing on Hyundai showrooms to sell cars in the U.S., but that’s about to change. Distancing itself from the mainstream brand is necessary to realize Genesis’ ambitions of a luxury label, and central to that is a premium car shopping experience. According to a MotorTrend report, Genesis spokesperson Jarred Pellat has said that Genesis plans to open 150 showrooms of its own in the USA. By the time the Electrified GV70 touches American shores, the first Genesis showrooms should be up and running.
The first exclusive Genesis dealership is coming soon in Lafayette, Louisiana, and then the second one will be in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Genesis already runs a brand experience center in the United States. Called Genesis House, it’s a three-story building spread over an area of 46,000 sq. ft. in New York. It includes not only a showroom but also a South Korean restaurant and a teahouse, as well as a cafe, a boutique, a lightbox theater, and an outdoor deck.
Release Date
Genesis Motor North America COO Claudia Marquez has suggested that the Electrified GV70 may go on sale in the U.S. in 2023, not this year. In December 2021, Marquez told MotorTrend that the company will launch the GV60 and Electrified G80 “next year (2022)” and the “Electrified GV70 will be next.” The reason behind not releasing the Electrified GV70 in the U.S. immediately could be to watch what the U.S. government does about the proposed extra incentives for EVs made at unionized American factories.
Another possibility is that the company has a lot on its plate for this year with the two confirmed releases, namely Electrified G80 and GV60, which need to sail smoothly, before adding vehicles. Then there’s the semiconductor chip shortage that is limiting the production of cars worldwide, which would impact Genesis’ American market allocation.

South Korea
The Genesis Electrified GV70 is available to pre-order in South Korea now. There, it costs KRW 73.32 million, which converts to approx. USD 61,000. This price is based on a 3.5% individual consumption tax after EV tax benefits.
Europe
Genesis entered Europe in 2021, announcing three electric cars in the first year. It has launched the G80 Electric as the first EV offering. The GV60 (the ‘dedicated electric platform’ model) and the Electrified GV70 would follow it.
Australia & New Zealand
The Electrified GV70 should go on sale in Australia later this year. According to a report from caradvice.com.au, the company has confirmed that it plans to launch three EVs in Australia in the first half (January-June). These should be the Electrified G80, the GV60, and the Electrified GV70, as there are no other immediate e-launches from Genesis. The Electrified GV70 could be the last to touch showroom floors.
Andy Sinclair, General Manager, Hyundai (New Zealand), said that the company will consider bringing Genesis to New Zealand, as per an earlier Stuff report. Given the country’s new carbon-neutrality goals in the auto sector, the Electrified GV70 should be a part of the line-up of the luxury brand in the country. Sinclair said that bringing Genesis EVs to the country “makes sense” now that the government has proposed the Clean Car Standard and Clean Car discount.
The proposed Clean Car Standard aims to regulate importers to reduce CO2 emissions of vehicles entering New Zealand to specific standards. The Clean Car Discount is currently a rebate on low-CO2 emission light vehicles. From April 1, 2022, the New Zealand government wants to offer a range of rebates for new and used imported low-emission and hybrid light vehicles and charge a fee for high-polluting vehicles on the basis of their CO2 emission rating.
