Mid-size SUV buyers can now put the pedal to the metal with the 400 hp, 3.0-litre EcoBoost ST performance model.
DETROIT, MI: Following the world debut last week of the all-new Explorer mid-size SUV at Ford Field in Detroit, two additional 2020 models were debuted at this week’s North American International Auto Show.
The surprise was the ST version that turns this popular truck into a serious performance machine with 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 engine producing a potent 400 hp and 415 lb/ft of torque with a top speed of 143 mph.
Four-wheel-drive with selectable traction control and a 10-speed automatic transmission are standard.
Upgrades include the ST Street Pack and ST Track Pack, both of which have special 21-inch alloy wheels housing performance brakes with red rotors with stainless steel pistons.
The ST features a Sport Mode which is accessed by a rotary dial on the centre console and allows the driver to change the steering for a sportier feel, a more aggressive throttle response and transmission shifts with the gear change that are quicker and held longer.
It can be recognized from the outside by a black mesh grille treatment, liftgate badge, roof-rack side rails and skid plate elements.
At the show, Ford said a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel will be standard with flat-bottom heated sports steering wheel.
Also standard is a Class II Trailer Tow Package with Cargo Management System and Active Park Assist 2.0 which takes control of the steering wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal and gear shifter during parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers with just the touch of a button.
The other new model is the Explorer Hybrid with 3.3-litre V6/electric powertrain for a combined 318 hp with 10-speed modular hybrid automatic transmission.
The Explorer Hybrid is the first to use a specially configured lithium-ion batter which is liquid-cooled and fits under the second row seats to it doesn’t intrude on cargo and passenger volume.
Available in Limited edition trim, Explorer Hybrid comes with Active Noise Cancellation, Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+™ driver-assist technologies, leather seats with micro-perforation and accent stitching, second-row heated seats, a 14-speaker B&O premium sound system, wireless phone charging pad and 10-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats.
