The launch of the Toyota Hilux has been delayed in India. The pick-up was expected to launch in March after its unveiling. Toyota is yet to confirm the reason for the delay. However, the launch timeline could have shifted due to supply chain issues.
During the Hilux’s unveiling in February, the company was expected to announce the pricing and other details this month. Because of the dealy, the Toyota Hilux prices are expected to be revealed in May 2022.
According to Toyota, the Hilux was well-received in the market in its pre-booking phase. The company spotted receiving fresh bookings within a few days after the pick-up’s unveiling citing supply chain reasons.
The supply chain issues could be due to the shortage of semiconductors that currently plagues the world. Additionally, the Hilux is localized to a minor 30% in India as the majority is imported to India. The ongoing war between Soviet nations could have resulted in procurement and supply chain issues as well.
Commenting on bookings for Hilux in India, the company stated that “We will continue our efforts to resume the Hilux bookings at the soonest possible opportunity.”
Toyota Hilux Engine & Gearbox
The pick-up is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, which currently powers the Fortuner SUV in the brand’s line-up. The engine produces 204PS and 420Nm of peak torque paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The automatic variant of the SUV delivers improved torque of 500Nm — 80Nm more than the manual variant.
However, the highlight of the drivetrain has to be the Hilux’s 4×4 system which is known to conquer most terrains. The 4WD system features electronic differential locks with limited-slip function for improved off-road ability by improving the traction on loose surfaces.
Adding to the ruggedness of the pick-up, the Hilux features a water wading capacity of 700mm. The SUV is longer than the Innova Crysta and Fortuner and features a longer wheelbase too at 3,085mm — which is 335mm and 340mm longer than the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner, respectively.
Toyota Hilux Design
The Hilux’s design has seen several revisions over the years. The India-bound model will feature a large hexagonal grille with chrome surrounds. Other features include headlamps with LED DRLs, bash plates at either end, side-step for easy ingress and egress, flared wheel arches and a large loading bay.
The Hilux is sold in a double-cab format that can seat up to 5 occupants including the driver. The rugged looks of the SUV continue on the side with 18-inch alloy wheels taking centre stage.
However, the rear of the Hilux features a simple and functional design with a fold-out tailgate with a chrome-finished handle for the loading bay and vertically-placed wrap-around taillamps. The rear bumper gets a dual-tone look with silver accents.
Toyota Hilux Features
The interiors of the pick-up are similar to the ones on the Fortuner. The dashboard houses an 8.0-inch infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instrumentation is a combination of analogue dials and a MID screen placed in the middle.
Other features on the Hilux include auto climate control, steering mounted controls, rear AC vents, a 6-speaker audio system, front and rear parking sensors, heat shielding glass, a multi-information display and cruise control. On the safety front, it’ll come with 7 airbags, stability control, and hill hold assist.
The Toyota Hilux is expected to be offered at a base pricing of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom). It’ll be a premium alternative to the Isuzu V-Cross pickup truck.
Toyota Hilux Expected Price
Pre-bookings for the Hilux lifestyle pick-up were being accepted for Rs 1 lakh at dealerships or Rs 50,000 via the brand’s online platform. Toyota could price the Hilux between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 35 lakh, ex-showroom.
Thoughts About The Toyota Hilux India Launch Getting Delayed
Toyota Hilux is one of the most anticipated launches this year. The launch of the SUV is delayed due to various reasons. However, we expect the company to launch the Hilux in the next two months. The pick-up could be priced a little bit on the higher side due to the lower localization percentage for manufacturing. When launched the Hilux will rival the Isuzu V-Cross.
