New-car prices in South Africa are steadily continuing their upward ascent, with the country’s favourite automaker, Toyota, currently having six models on offer with window stickers in excess of R1 million.
These include the flagship Hilux Legend RS, the one-and-only Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon, the entire Prado and Land Cruiser 300 families, the luxurious Quantum VX Premium minibus, and the athletic GR Supra sports car.
If you’re spending upwards of seven figures on a Toyota you can be rest assured that you’ll only receive the best the automaker has to offer.
These are the highlights of all the R1-million Toyota bakkies, SUVs, and vans you can currently buy in South Africa.
Hilux Legend RS – R1,005,000
The range-topping Hilux Legend RS is the only model in the range with an asking price above R1 million.
This specific 4×4 is driven by a 2.8-litre, turbo-diesel motor paired with a six-speed auto-box that produces 150kW and 500Nm. Fuel consumption for this configuration is pegged at 8.0l/100km and it allows a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg and a maximum payload capacity of 775kg.
Standard nice-to-haves on the double cab include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED lights, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure assist, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 9-speaker JBL stereo.

It’s not so much what’s under the hood that makes up the price of this Toyota, but rather, what’s inside.

The Land Cruiser 300 is one of the most capable and simultaneously luxurious off-roaders out there and is in incredibly high demand despite its substantial asking price.
In South Africa, buyers have a choice between the base GX-R, the luxurious ZX, and the athletic GR-Sport, all providing unique looks and features that set them apart from one another.
Drivetrain options include a 3.3-litre, twin-turbo diesel unit for all three models, while the ZX and GR-Sport can also be specced with a 3.5-litre, twin-turbo petrol. The former pushes out 225kW and 700Nm, the latter does 305kW and 650Nm, and a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive system are included in both.
Consumption for the diesel is rated at 8.9l/100km and for the petrol a heavier 12.1l/100km, while all derivatives are capable of towing a healthy 3.5 tonnes.
