For as long as humans drive cars, there will be people stealing them, and car thefts have been on the rise. Last year was a big year for car thieves, and for the second year in a row, the Ford F-150 truck was the most stolen vehicle in North America. Usually, car thefts take place outside people's private residences, but more brazen thieves will target dealerships. These car-thieving experts went one step further when they stole four brand-new Ford Mustang GT500s from the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant in what seemed like a Gone In Sixty Seconds-style professional heist.
According to Flat Rock Police, one of the four cars ended up crashing through a security gate, but unfortunately, no video footage exists of the event.
The thieves targeted the Ford plant, located on 1 International Drive, south of Vreeland Road at approximately 10:50 pm on Sunday night, and instead of taking the stealthy approach, used one of the GT500's to ram through the security gate in order for the other three vehicles to pass freely.
Shortly after the theft, Flat Rock police recovered two of the stolen vehicles on I-75 in Brownstown Township. One of the vehicles had heavy front damage, and both cars were unoccupied. The two Mustangs that got away are said to be “Belladonna black” in color. No further details have been provided.
There is little wonder in our minds why the thieves would've targeted these specific cars: the Ford Mustang GT500 is one badass car, and they can fetch a pretty price on the black market, or even as parts cars.
The recently unveiled 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 starts at $77,260 and is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine producing 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission. The range-topping Mustang has a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.3 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of under 11 seconds. The Flat Rock police department requests that anyone with any information on the theft contact them directly.
