Off-road enthusiasts will need to earn at least R191,000 per month in order to purchase the most expensive bakkie in South Africa, according to a calculation by TopAuto.
The title of the most high-end high-rider in the country belongs to the Quartermaster – a newcomer to the scene developed by Ineos, a chemical company that has branched out into the world of motoring.
It is available in three trim levels, though the two flagship units share the same price and are only differentiated by their features:
- Ineos Quartermaster – R1,717,100
- Ineos Quartermaster Trialmaster Edition – R1,862,100
- Ineos Quartermaster Fieldmaster Edition – R1,862,100
Each of these vehicles is also available with two different engines – a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol or diesel – both of which are sourced from BMW. The petrol version provides 210kW and 450Nm, while the diesel generates 183kW and 550Nm.
These powerplants then connect to a permanent all-wheel-drive system with an eight-speed automatic transmission; the result of all of these factors being a towing capacity of 3,500kg, and a load capacity of 760kg.
Standard features consist of 17-inch steel wheels, Bridgestone all-terrain tyres, rear park-distance control, a first aid kit, cloth upholstery, a Nappa leather steering wheel, a rear mounting bar for the load area, front and rear skid plates, LED headlights, an overhead control panel with pre-wired switches, roof rails, and an off-road navigation system.
Depending on whether you opt for the Trialmaster or Fieldmaster, you can also expect items like a rearview camera, ambient lighting, a raised air intake, leather upholstery, and heated seats.
What you need to earn
We can use the following formula to work out the monthly payments for the new Quartermaster.
- Car price – R1,717,100/R1,862,100
- Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
- Interest – 11.75%
- Deposit – 0%
- Balloon – No balloon payment
- Extras – No optional extras
This means South Africans will need to spend at least R38,075 per month to buy the bakkie on a finance plan, and up to R41,282 per month for one of the range-toppers.
Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.
In other words, interested parties will need to earn at least R190,375 per month to afford the base Quatermaster, or R206,410 per month for the Trialmaster and Fieldmaster.
Note that this figure does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which all need to be factored into your budget.
