BMW is hugely popular in South Africa – and sells over 150 models in the country.
Which ones come with the biggest price tag, you ask?
We answer this question in the list below, looking at the following segments which BMW competes in:
- Hatchback
- Sedan
- SUV
- M Car
- M SUV
- Hybrid/Electric vehicle
- Motorcycle
Hatchback
The most expensive hatchback is none other than the BMW M135i xDrive.
In this four-wheel-drive guise, the 1-series produces 225kW of power and 450Nm of torque out of its 2.0-litre engine – which is enough to send it to 100km/h just 4.8 seconds.
The extreme hatchback will cost you R808,188.
Sedan
The BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Individual has you covered in the sedan segment.
From the enlarged kidney grille, to the body-spanning light bar at the rear, everything about this car is pushed to the absolute maximum.
On the inside, you would be hard pressed to find a surface that isn’t covered in leather or metal, and if you do, the electric sun blinds will be able to hide your face of embarrassment from the outside world.
The price you would need to pay for this privilege is R3,490,976.
SUV
When it come to SUVs, the BMW X7 M50i stands high and proud.
It is the first of its kind, and is the largest production vehicle that the brand has built to date.
Angular lines and large proportions define this SUV’s imposing figure, while a 4.4-litre V8 motor provides enough power to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds.
This impressive package is not cheap, though, and comes at a price of R2,191,560.
M Car
The most expensive M model is the BMW M8 Competition Convertible.
For this model, BMW fitted a 4.4-litre V8 engine that churns out 460kW of power and 750Nm of torque.
This iteration of the 8-Series follows the first generation which was introduced in 1990 and discontinued in 1999.
After the latest version was released, it shot to the top of BMWs line-up in terms of both cost and performance – and has stayed there ever since.
Price: R3,630,862
M SUV
The model BMW has chosen to spearhead the M SUV movement is the BMW X6 M Competition First Edition.
It can reach 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, carry 750 litres of cargo, and it is another car-inspired-SUV with a coupé roofline.
The interior is luxurious and full of leather and carbon, and there is even a plaque letting you know which one of the 250 “First Editions” you have.
The price that BMW asks for this exclusivity is R3,080,320.
Hybrid/Electric
BMW has two electric SUVs coming later in 2021, an all-electric i3 hatchback already on the market, and a hybrid sports car in the form of the i8.
The latter is their most expensive model when take in its convertible configuration.
Buying this car will get you a 1.5-litre internal combustion engine and a chassis that is dressed up with a battery pack and two electric motors.
A total power output of 170kW and 320Nm of torque is what you can expect from this convertible, and a price tag of R2,542,900 comes along with it.
Motorcycle
The Motorrad division of BMW sells a beast of a superbike called the S1000.
It is a road-legal adaptation of their track-only racing bike, and it has more power than many entry-level hatchbacks.
A 1.0-litre engine provides 152kW of power and 113Nm of torque to play with, and a total weight of 175kg assures maximum acceleration and speed.
It is luckily much more affordable than its track-only counterpart – which is over R1 million – but will still cost R332,100 to own.
