The 2023 BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay could’ve been ideated by the late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. Or maybe BMW product planners and designers have been drinking too much Mello Yello. Regardless of where the gilded inspiration came from, the U.S. will be getting a special edition of the X2 sDrive28i and XDrive28i with the San Remo Green metallic paint and lots and lots of Galvanic Gold details.
The X2 Edition GoldPlay gets all the goodies from the small SUV’s optional M Sport package that includes an M Sport suspension with a 0.4-inch-lower ride height, M Sport steering, M bucket seats, larger air intakes, an aerodynamics package and high-gloss black details.
But, of course, it’s the golden details that distinguish this special edition model, and you can see splashes of the hue on the wheels, grille surround, mirror caps and side graphics. In a world where black on black seems to be everyone’s favorite combination, BMW is coming out with something completely different to attract a younger audience.
Inside, the GoldPlay gets special accents that combine with the exterior colors. The door sills have the word “Edition” engraved in the same Galvanic Gold color used on the exterior, and BMW used a laser engraving technique for the first time to apply a graphic in Golden Mica metallic on the dashboard. Like you would expect, the cabin also gets gold contrast stitching on the door panels, dashboard, bucket seats, and center stack, while the floor mats have a gold contour.
Mechanically, the BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay will continue to be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that produces 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, just like the other versions. An eight speed automatic sends that power to two or all four wheels depending on the drivetrain configuration.
If you’re into the GoldPlay, expect the first units to roll out of the factory in March, with the first units set to arrive Stateside a few weeks after that. Pricing will be announced closer to its on-sale date.
