The big reveal is getting closer.
BMW is finally bringing back the high-performance M division's famed CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) nameplate. The M4 CSL is due to make its debut appearance sometime this year. Ultimate Driving Machine enthusiasts are undoubtedly excited. What can we expect? For starters, a more powerful version of the M4's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, currently producing 473 horsepower in base form, or 503 hp in the Competition version.
Ex-BMW M boss Markus Flasch confirmed the engine will not receive any electrical assistance. The only gearbox to be offered is the familiar and excellent eight-speed automatic. It'll also be rear-wheel-drive only. No complaints there. The M4 CSL could have as much as 540 hp on tap, the perfect gift for the M division's 50th anniversary.
Rumor also has it an even more special and potentially more powerful M4 is on the way, too. We’ll know for certain in the coming few months. Today, our spy photographers have snapped a test mule M4 CSL once again, only this time we’re able to catch a glimpse of its standard carbon fiber bucket seats.
Look carefully behind the seats and there’s also a large CSL plaque mounted where the rear seat would normally be placed. This feature has been removed for weight-saving purposes. This is a driver’s performance machine, after all. Unfortunately, our photographer wasn’t able to get additional interior shots because the test driver was pushing him out of the way.
We're still pleased by what has been revealed here. Along with the simplified interior, the M4 CSL's exterior has received significant enhancements as well. Up front, there are redesigned Y-shaped horizontal slats, a new front splitter, and restyled headlights and grille. The taillights have also been slightly tweaked with a new graphic design. Above them, the trunk lid spoiler has been enhanced. BMW continues to cover up the rear side windows in an attempt to hide the rear seat delete. New wheel designs are highly likely as well.
There's still no word on pricing but it'll definitely surpass the standard M4's $72,000 MSRP. Don't be too surprised if the M4 CSL arrives wearing a price tag of $100k.
