An all-electric Skoda family estate is on its way, with a likely range of 400 miles

Skoda’s EV plans will include an all-electric estate car that’s been previewed by an official sculpture. Sitting alongside a raft of electric SUVs announced by the Czech firm, the low-slung estate should suit buyers looking for an efficient family car, and give the MG5 EV one of its only rivals.
It will be one of the largest models to take advantage of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, underpinning existing models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born. The Skoda estate is likely to share some of its technology with the recently-revealed Volkswagen ID.7, which is being offered in both saloon and estate bodystyles.
Measuring around 4.7 metres in length, Skoda’s new estate will have a similar footprint to the combustion-engined Skoda Octavia, while being smaller than the Skoda Superb Estate. However, its electric platform – with a flat floor and compact electric motors – could see interior space expanded to rival the bigger Superb.
While Skoda is tight-lipped about specifications, we can draw parallels with the ID.7 the model is likely to be based on. If the estate shares its technology, expect an 86kWh battery with a maximum range of around 400 miles – further than a current Tesla Model 3 Long Range. While a single-motor version will probably be fine for most family duties, Skoda could also spec a dual-motor model with extra performance, probably badged vRS to offer an alternative or replacement to the petrol, diesel and plug-in powered Skoda Octavia vRS Estate.
As previewed by our exclusive render – that’s closely based on Skoda’s official sculpture – the estate will feature the ‘Modern Solid’ design theme ushered in by the Skoda Vision 7S concept, and set to adorn the Skoda Elroq SUV. Its main characteristics are a simplified exterior design for a clean look, along with a minimalist cabin and a central portrait infotainment touchscreen. Skoda is, however, expected to keep some physical buttons and dials to ensure the car’s functions are intuitive to use, even at night and while on the move.
