Nakamura is working on giving the EV Sport 01 a clean and simple design with a natural and minimalistic look.
Shiro Nakamura, former chief creative officer of Nissan, has stated the design on the current batch of EVs are too aggressive.
Nakamura, who designed the 350Z and R35 GT-R during his tenure at Nissan, currently works for a small Japanese firm called AIM and has been tasked to design their EV Sport 01 – a compact but high-performance fun-to-drive sports car.
The R35 GT-R designer stated that almost all EVs (apart from MINI) are focused on looking aggressive and powerful. He, however, feels they could be designed to look charming too. With this in mind, Nakamura is working on giving the EV Sport 01 a clean and simple design with a natural and minimalistic look. The EV sports car is said to have no contrasting surfaces and features a charming face.
Yukinori Suzuki, the boss at AIM, has also tasked Nakamura to make the EV not only charming, but also difficult to get in and out of because it’s a “driver’s car”.
The GT-R designer also stated that designing an EV is a challenge because of the different layout compared to an ICE car. In a conventional car, one has to clearly define where the engine is, and design it accordingly. However, an EV doesn’t have that constraint and designers are more free to express their styling.
The upcoming EV Sport 01 will be powered by a pair of electric motors producing around 600 BHP. The electric powertrain claims to offer 300 km of range, but the size of the battery packs is yet to be revealed.
