Three trims and three reasonable prices.
The Subaru Impreza is returning for a sixth generation as a five-door hatchback only with three trim levels, three extra option packages, and a starting price of $22,995 before a $1,090 delivery charge. That means, out the door, you should be able to get into a new Impreza in 2023 for $24,085.
The Base and Sport trims come with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque and are priced at $26,085 and $28,975, respectively, before delivery charges. The RS trim comes with a 2.5-liter boxer engine making 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque and starts at $28,975. However, there's no manual option and you're stuck with an economy-based CVT – albeit with programmed steps to replicate a traditional auto through the paddles.
The base Impreza comes with a nice list of standard features, including EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, but there doesn't seem to be a way to upgrade the base model to get blind spot assist, which is something we want to see standard in all-new vehicles. It does come with steering responsive LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch color LCD gauge display, and dual 7.0-inch touchscreen displays.
The infotainment comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Sirius XM and HD radio compatibility. The only package available is with a set of 16-inch alloy wheels for an extra $350.
Most buyers will step up to the Sport trim, which comes with the SI-Drive performance management system, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a CVT featuring 8-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. It also adds, amongst other things, an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, keyless access and a push button start, and black cloth upholstery with red stitching. The option package for the Sport trim adds a power moonroof, blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert, and an All-Weather Package for $1,900.
The RS trim gets upgraded with what looks suspiciously like the above package for the Sport as standard, sporty exterior trim touches including blacked-out trim, RS badges, 18-inch alloy wheels in a dark gray finish, and upgraded LED headlights. Inside, it gets gunmetal and simulated carbon fiber interior trim accents, sport front seats in black cloth with red cloth bolsters, and the requisite RS badging.
The package available for the RS model includes a Harmon Kardon sound system, a power moonroof, and a 10-way power front driver seat with lumbar support for $2,070.
If you want an actual performance Impreza, then you should look at the WRX, which starts at $30,605. If not, the 2023 Impreza is an absolute steal.
