The latest iteration of Subaru’s compact crossover, the Crosstrek, is finally in Singapore, and it’s a lot more capable than ever before.
For folks who are more in tune with the brand’s global efforts, you may recognise the “Crosstrek” nameplate from North American versions of the XV. Now, it seems that the latter moniker has been dropped from our market in a bid to unify the Subaru lineup.
“Playful design” is the key phrase here, and the Crosstrek now sports more adventurous aesthetics, such as flared fenders and rugged plastic cladding all around the vehicle. The front fascia, in particular, has gained aggressive “claw-like” cladding elements and sleeker LED headlights.
It’s just as aggressive at the back, with sporty diffusers flanked by even more dramatic-looking plastic cladding housing the rear reflectors. According to Subaru, 10 colour options will be made available for the Crosstrek, including three model-exclusive paints: Oasis Blue, Offshore Blue Metallic and Sun Blaze Pearl.
But changes are not just skin-deep, as we found out during the launch event.
The new Crosstrek is powered by an e-BOXER Hybrid system, making it the second petrol-electric Subaru to be available here after the Forester SUV.
At the heart of the system is a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four engine, delivering 148 bhp and 196 Nm of torque. The carmaker states that the engine has received several upgrades in the name of performance and efficiency, including a new cylinder head and pistons. Mated to it is an electric motor which produces 16.5 bhp and 66 Nm of torque.
Like all other modern Subies, the Crosstrek comes with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard. Off-road enthusiasts will also be happy to know that it’s equipped with Dual-Function X-MODE. This an advanced AWD function adapts to surrounding terrains like muddy trails and deep snow, maintaining grip and forward momentum in the process.
Other technologies packed into the Crosstrek that aid in traction and safety include Vehicle Dynamics Control System (VDC) and Enhanced EyeSight 4.0. According to Subaru, the latest version of their EyeSight active safety suite now makes full use of three cameras and a wide-angle monocular camera to effectively watch your front.
Its cabin is now much more modern too, with 10-way electrical adjustment for the driver’s seat and eight-way adjustment for the front passenger. Taking centre stage on the dashboard is a large 11.6-inch high-definition infotainment display, which can integrate with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly.
A pair of USB ports – one Type A and one Type C – can be found below the display, while another pair is available for rear occupants to charge their devices. Traditionalists can also blast their music the old-school way via a 3.5 mm jack, which is available on the dashboard.
Prices for the new Crosstrek e-BOXER Hybrid begin at $216,800 (with COE).
