What is that? Apparently, that is the Ford Fusion Active.
A few years ago, Ford discontinued the Fusion, along with almost all other cars in its lineup — except for the Mustang and, in some markets, the Focus Active — due to increasing SUV demand.
Rumours in the automotive world say the Fusion nameplate will return, but this time around, it’ll be a crossover utility vehicle (CUV). And of course — we never get anything good — it’ll be made for the Chinese market.
That said, there’s a bit of hope for the North American market: it’s been reported that Ford intends to kill off the Edge in 2023. This two-row CUV could be a great replacement that slots directly in between Escape and Explorer. We’ll have to wait and see on that front, though.

Until then, all we can do is stare at these spy shots of the extremely camouflaged prototype that photographers captured near the Dearborn R&D centre in Michigan. Though it’s super-covered, it’s obvious the Fusion Active will have more of a wagon look, rather than that of a boxy or coupe SUV.
We don’t have many details, but the Fusion Active was presented last year at the Shanghai Motor Show. It is supposedly built around the 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo, with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel-drive layout; it will likely be based on the C2 platform, which replaces the CD4 platform of the discontinued Fusion, Taurus, MKZ, and Continental.
