MG wants to introduce a smaller, more affordable version of the Cyberster electric roadster.
MG is considering the development of a smaller and more affordable version of its upcoming MG Cyberster electric sports car. For the uninitiated, the Cyberster is the British brand's Mazda MX-5 Miata fighter but powered purely by electricity.
While the official confirmation is still pending, Oleg Son, the global chief designer at MG, expressed his enthusiasm for designing what he called a “baby Cyberster” in an interview with Australia's Carsales.
The MG Cyberster, set to be unveiled publicly at the 75th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this week, comes with an electric powertrain producing approximately 536 horsepower. With its impressive acceleration of under three seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint, the Cyberster is positioned as a supercar competitor. However, Son acknowledged that this flagship model might not cater to everyone's needs.

Describing the design process of the Cyberster as a dream for a car designer, Son explained that the project had more financial flexibility than other MG models due to its higher price range. The car's dimensions and platform offered ample creative freedom, making it an easier task. However, Son recognized the need for a more accessible MG vehicle to coexist with the mainstream MG 4 hatchback.
“It’s not for everybody, so my dream now is to come up with an MG which would be maybe in the Cyber line; I don’t know how to call it, in the Cyber family, but much more affordable – not competing with a more mainstream car like the MG4, but a car that you could use every day, still a sports car but you could open the roof,” told the Australian publication.

Son describes the cheaper model as having an open roof and being visually appealing while still being practical for daily use. He wants to capture the driving experience of the MG 4, particularly the Mulan Triumph Edition.
Son aims to infuse the same excitement into the mini-Cyberster, citing the MG 4's fun and engaging nature that surprised and pleased social media users and automotive journalists. Son plans to capture this joy in the car's design and interior, creating a delightful daily driving experience.
It's unclear whether the smaller Cyberster will ever become a reality. But perhaps the bigger question is whether the Cyberster is ever coming to the US.
For now, it isn't. But stranger things have happened.
