Some very impressive numbers surround the new baby electric car in the Volvo linw-up – the EX30 small SUV – including its power and price.
Revealed overnight and already confirmed for an arrival late this year, the 2024 Volvo EX30 kicks off from just $59,990 before on-road costs for its entry grade in Australia, the EX30 Single Motor Extended Plus.
While the brand boasts the EX30 has “the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo produced to date”, buyers might be more enticed by the 200kW of power and 343Nm offered up by its entry model, along with its claimed 480 kilometres of electric driving range thanks to its 69kWh battery.
As standard, it comes with wireless phone charging, a Harman Kardon sound system, a power tailgate and parking sensors.
A higher-spec version with the same drivetrain, the Single Motor Extended Ultra, comes in at $64,990 and includes features like a panoramic glass roof, surround-view parking cameras, power and heated seats, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The $69,990 top-spec version – the EX30 Twin Performance Ultra – comes with similar features, but adds a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, which puts out a huge 315kW of power and 543Nm of torque – wild numbers for a baby SUV.
Its range is lower due to the additional motor and power use – but 460 kilometres is still quite impressive. Volvo says both drivetrain versions are able to charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in about half an hour.
Volvo is also including digital key functionality, a soundbar speaker across the dash, as well as its 12.3-inch ‘tablet’ style multimedia touchscreen and a cabin air filter for extra premium touches to the entry model in its EV line-up.
Volvo Australia Managing Director Stephen Connor hopes the aggressive pricing and popularity of the small SUV segment will help the brand find new customers.
“With the EX30 we enter a new, growing segment: the small, fully electric luxury SUV. The EX30 offers a strong value proposition to a new audience in the Australian car market which is increasingly embracing EVs.”
Within three years, Connor says, Volvo’s Australian range will be entirely electric.
“The EX30 will further drive our accelerated Australian strategy of being an all electric car company by 2026.”
The Volvo EX30 is expected to arrive initially in late 2023, with its first volume deliveries commencing from early 2024.
