The iconic GT40 which first raced in May of 1964 at the Nürburgring has had two retro reboots but its latest second gen Ford GT successor will cease production in December of this year. As of the beginning of 2022, the intricately styled EcoBoost V6 powered GT sold 1,071 units which makes it a rare piece of Ford’s racing history.

Starting out life in the early 1960’s after Henry Ford II made a firm commitment to beat Il Commendatore (Enzo Ferrari) at his own game after purchasing the Italian brand fell through. The original Ford GT40 first raced in 1964 but only managed to fulfil its intended purpose a few years later when it won the 1966 edition of Le Mans to Enzo’s dismay.
Over the subsequent years, the model found numerous derivatives including five iterations of the original spec which all enjoyed a racing pedigree throughout its 1964-1969, 105 unit production run. Once again Ford’s halo sports car will be coming to an end in December of this year when the second gen Ford GT reboot ceases production.
Multimatic, the company that produces these hypercars, intends to have another 250 units produced by December bringing the total estimated tally to 1,350 and just making it slightly rarer than the last Prancing Horse that was signed off by Enzo Ferrari himself; the F40 which sold 1,311 examples.

The race-bred supercar is the product of the Blue Oval’s impressive racing heritage and like its predecessor from the 1960’s, the V6 reboot was created with the goal of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans which it did in its first attempt this time around. The year of its introduction in 2016 also marked the semi-centennial anniversary of the prototypical model taking victory in the 1966 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
