In an emerging rumour, it seems BMW will not be including internal combustion powertrains in its forthcoming new X4, instead the range will be exclusively available with battery electric technology. Not all is lost though, since the Bavarian automaker has a fossil-fuel-powered alternative in mind.

A reliable source claims BMW is set to axe the X4 as we know it and replace it with ab all-electric model. Should this happen, the new X4 will likely be available exclusively in iX4 guise. Being one of the automaker’s global volume sellers, there are however plans in place that cater to buyers not quite ready to make the switch away from fossil fuels.
194 mm longer than the outgoing model (while being 54 mm longer than the current X1 with which it shares its underpinnings with), talk suggests that the main reason that the forthcoming new X2 has grown in size – including a longer wheelbase and altogether broader stance than before – is so that it might serve as a adequate substitute for X4 owners that might not be keen to make the move to an EV lifestyle.
In terms of the South African market, the second-generation (G02) X4 model that was launched globally in 2018 currently has several derivatives and powertrains to choose from, including the X4 xDrive20d, the X4 xDrive20d M Sport and the six-cylinder X4 M40i. For more potency, buyers can currently still opt for the full-fat X4 M competition which tops the price sheets over R2,2 million.
Set to be introduced into South Africa in the first quarter of 2024, the all-new X4 will initially feature a range that includes a sDrive18i M Sport, sDrive20d and M35i xDrive.
