The death of the internal combustion engine was greatly exaggerated as it would not happen in the near future regardless of what some people might claim. Nevertheless, increasingly stringent emissions regulations have forced automakers to install petrol particulate filters in some parts of the world, adversely affecting the soundtrack delivered by a high-performance car powered by a petrol engine.
As electrification intensifies, ICE’s golden age will sooner or later end. It will be a sad day where this will happen as it will make the sports cars more subdued in terms of the noise provided by the engine, before it is completely silenced in the EV era. Some would argue that turbocharging already mimics some of the magic, as we often find ourselves enjoying the sweet music made by a person who aspires more naturally than anything else.
This brings us to a video taken on a rainy day in the Netherlands during a car meeting dedicated to the M cars. That makes such a desirable sound. This is not to say that the newer cars sound bad, but there is something special about the tone of a large-volume natural pumping mill.
Of course it’s a matter of personal preferences at the end of the day. It’s the same story with the design, as some prefer the older models with a cleaner and more restrained look while others appreciate the atmosphere of looking at me that the latest BMW M models convey. The multiplicity of optional M Performance parts for the M model is already filled with the fat of the trees for the aggressive look, while the new grille design has improved the polarized design approach.
The video serves as a brief overview of more modern M cars built from the early 2000s, including models now offered for sale. The man with the camera gives us the impression that the M6 E63 was his personal favorite, which is completely understandable given the lovely music produced by the 5.0-liter S85 engine. The propulsion system begged for a car with a lightweight medium engine, but that’s a story for another day …
