The new Ford Ranger Wildtrak X is on sale in South Africa at a starting price of R1,013,000.
The X is positioned as the middle ground between the existing Wildtrak and the halo-model Raptor, utilizing the engine of the former while adding new off-road-focused features that put it more on par with the latter.
Equipped with a 2.0-litre, bi-turbo diesel engine connecting to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the newcomer boasts an output 154kW and 500Nm, and it is also the only 2.0-litre Ranger that comes with the advanced four-wheel-drive system found in the 3.0-litre, V6 units.
This lends it the traditional 2H, 4H, and 4L settings, as well as a 4A (automatic) mode which can adapt to the terrain in real-time and adjust power flow accordingly.
The new model also has a 30mm-wider track at 1,650mm, and specially-made Bilstein suspension that raise its ground clearance from 237mm to 263mm.
Other additions include a front underbody steel protection plate and model-specific 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels with General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres.
The new bakkie is also the first to feature Ford’s Trail Turn Assist feature, which can reduce its turning circle by 25% by using “brake-based torque vectoring” at speeds under 19km/h.
On the styling front, the X gains a unique Asphalt-coloured grille with integrated auxiliary driving lights and Cyber Orange accents around the exterior, and blackened Ford oval badges.
Another new item is the Flexible Rack System, comprised of a sliding load rack with five locking positions, and folding roof racks that store inside the roof rails when not in use.
Inside, buyers can look forward to a Miko suede-trimmed upholstery with Wildtrak X embroidery and contrast Cyber Orange stitching, as well as an 8-inch instrument cluster, a 12-inch infotainment display with smartphone pairing, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, electric front seats, a wireless charger, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
