The BMW 5 Series line-up for the next generation is shaping up, with the Munich brand’s CEO confirming at least two body styles and variants ahead of the big reveal later this year.
Though BMW won’t pull the covers off the new 5 Series until October, the world has been at least given a look at the covers – and subsequently the silhouette of what we can expect.
Announced today in a preview, the 5 Series is confirmed to be ready with electric and plug-in hybrid variants, as well as petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild hybrid assistance.
The new BMW Operating System 8.5 with BMW Curved Display is also confirmed, but word from the CEO regarding input from BMW M as well as a body style will be welcomed by BMW enthusiasts.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW has confirmed the new 5 Series line-up will still, like the 4 Series, have a variant with M division’s fingerprints all over it.
“The all-electric BMW i4 M50 shows how BMW blends dynamic performance and electric mobility to perfection,” said Zipse.
He adds that the i4 M50 “was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022”, though arguably it’s not a full ‘M model’.
“A fully electric Performance model from BMW M GmbH will also be included in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan line-up.”
In addition, while the wagon body style has fallen out of favour in places like Australia where the SUV reigns lord of the passenger car domain, BMW will bring the 5 Series Touring into the electric era.
“The BMW 5 Series Touring is very popular, particularly in Europe,” said Zipse.
“From spring 2024 it will also come in an all-electric version, giving us a truly unique selling point in this segment.”
