BMW’s new art car will have 99 units built by famous artist Jeff Koons with an eye watering price tag. The pop art inspired exterior will feature a completely bespoke interior to match but unfortunately this custom model will only be available in the US.

Kicking off the project titled 8 X Jeff Koons with the first creation to be sold to benefit charity as part of a Christie’s auction in New York on the 4th of April. All subsequent models will hold the price tag of $350,995 when they go on sale in the US.

BMW USA is already taking pre-orders for the pop art inspired creation while one of the 99 units will be going on a global tour starting with a display at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City from the 1st to the 4th of April. If the East Coast city is too far off your radar, it will also be shown at the 16th Istanbul Contemporary, Paris Photo, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Art Dubai, West Bund Art & Design Fair Shanghai, and Art Basel Hong Kong.

More on the creative process then shall we? The project starts life out as an M850i xDrive Gran Coupe which is delivered to Koons for his creative process. Both the front and rear bumpers have been given a fresh lick of yellow paint while the pop art theme prevalent throughout the rest of the car carry through to the stylised yellow motifs.

The rest of the pop art inspired vehicle employs blue and grey swatches with symbolic Roy Lichtenstein inspired swooshes emerging from air vents and text overlaid on the flanks of the Gran Coupe. Horizontal line work breaks up the changes of colour which allude to forward movement too. A stylised BMW logo adorns the majority of the swooping bonnet while a flash dominates the rear end inbetween the taillights.

The interior seems to have borrowed the same colour swatches from the latest Spider-Man outfit with bright red and blue seats dominating the focal point while the rest of the interior is a more subtle burgundy and light brown. Koons’ signature is adorned in front of the gear shifter to further signify the bespoke creation.
