The Peugeot Landtrek bakkie is launching in South Africa in November, and is poised to give the current market leaders a run for their money.
The Landtrek will be “entering the one ton pick-up segment” when it arrives, and it is based on the “fundamentals” of this category.
These fundamentals, according to Peugeot, include a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, versatility, different body shapes, off-road abilities, robustness, and ease of repair.
What we know
At launch, the Peugeot Landtrek will be available with both petrol and diesel engine options, with both motors connected to a six-speed manual transmission as standard.
An optional six-speed automatic transmission with Eco and Sports mode will be on offer, too.
The bakkies will be fitted with the “Iconic Peugeot Grill”, alloy wheels, and LED lights – with ground clearance for the rugged Peugeot ranging between 214mm and 235mm.
Buyers will also have a choice between 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains, with a dial inside the cabin allowing the driver to switch between high and low gears, as well as toggle the diff-lock.
What to expect
As the local details for the Landtrek are still few, we looked at the markets where it is already available to see what we can expect.
In Latin America, the Landtrek is offered with a 2.4-litre petrol engine that generates 157kW and 320Nm, or a 1.9-litre, turbo-diesel motor producing 112kW and 350Nm.
This allows the Peugeot bakkie to carry up to 1.15 tonnes of cargo, as well as tow up to 3,500kg.
It also boasts segment-leading off-road capabilities – such as a 600mm water wading depth, an approach angle of 29 degrees, and a departure angle of 27 degrees.
Inside, the Landtrek offers a premium interior that looks far more car-like than the bakkies it’s going to compete against.
Situated in the middle of the dash is a 10-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a 10GB onboard hard drive allows storage of photos and music.
It also comes with automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, climate control, a leather multifunction steering wheel, a multi-information display in the instrument cluster, and a range of upholsteries.
In addition, a 360-degree camera with off-road configurations and “3D vision” is available.
A host of safety systems are then standard on the Landtrek in Mexico, including hill start assist, hill descent assist, trailer stability control, traction control, lane keep alert, and front and rear parking sensors.
Price
There is no South African pricing for the Peugeot Landtrek currently available.
In Mexico, the Landtrek has a converted starting price of R386,100.
