Summary

The Peugeot 108 is a small, city-class, five-door hatchback. It is also available as a cabriolet version, which features a full-length fabric sunroof in a similar vein to the Fiat 500. The current model was launched in 2014, replacing the previous Peugeot 107.

The 108 is essentially identical to the Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo, with the three models developed together and built at the same factory in the Czech Republic. It has been speculated that, when the current model ends production (expected to be in 2021), it will not be replaced. With Peugeot’s parent company Stellantis now also owning Fiat, it is likely that any future Peugeot city car will be based on the new, all-electric Fiat 500.

The 108 underwent its most recent update in 2021, adding new trim and colour options but also dropping the three-door variants. As of 2021 sources suggest the model’s days are numbered, Toyota taking full ownership of the factory and planning a different sort of Aygo in 2022.

Reviewers generally consider the 108 a distinct improvement on its predecessor the 107, which was also a joint project with Citroën and Toyota. Parkers notes the way it looks like its bigger sister the 208, and more importantly how the ‘wheel on corners’ design produces surprising interior space in a small car.

Originally there were 1.0 and 1.2-litre engine options (as well as a cabriolet model) but now just the three-cylinder 1-litre is available with 73hp and emissions of 110-111g/km. Testers like this unit, typical of the comments being from the Sunday Times, “adequate in its power and easy on the fuel.” But Auto Express regrets the demise of the 1.2, “which gave the car an extra little punch.”

While more recent small cars have dulled the appeal of the 108, reviewers do like the range of personalisation options available on the Peugeot, which Auto Express adds; “will certainly attract younger buyers.”

Despite its age, the Peugeot 108 has continued to receive generally positive reviews from the UK motoring media. Its overall Expert Rating of 55% (as of December 2021), however, falls a long way short of the class-leading Hyundai i10. In addition, its previous four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP has expired as the car no longer meets the required standards for that score.

Safety rating

No safety rating

The Peugeot 108 was assessed by Euro NCAP back in 2014 and achieved a four-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2021 and is no longer valid.

Euro NCAP’s crash testing standards are raised almost every year, and ratings will expire when a vehicle no longer meets the latest standards for that rating. Sometimes a vehicle will be re-tested against the newer standards and awarded a new (usually lower) rating, but this has not happened in the case of the Peugeot 108.

The Peugeot 108 has not been lab tested by Green NCAP. This is a new initiative, launched in 2018 as a sister organisation to Euro NCAP, and only a few cars have do far been assessed.

The 108 is now an old car, so it is likely that it will never be tested by Green NCAP. If it does ever happen, we’ll update this page with the results.
