MG is set to build its first sports car since 2011, if the MG E-motion concept is anything to go by.
The electric car concept has been unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, and industry insiders suggest that it will reach production, retaining its electric drivetrain, by 2020. If so it would see the now Chinese-owned MG taking on the Tesla Model S.
Officially MG says that the car offers ‘a glimpse of the future’ and is a ‘next generation vehicle (aiming) to push the boundaries of innovation and technology, while meeting the needs of today’s trend-setting car buyers.’
Under four sec to 62mph
Details of the plug-in electric drivetrain have not been released but MG says that it makes the E-motion capable of a sub four-second 0-62mph time, while having a range between charges of more than 310 miles.
The car is also equipped with an intelligent infotainment system and fully internet-compatible, which MG believes will position it perfectly for the younger market.
Notable styling elements of the four-seater car include the butterfly doors and a starlight matrix front grille and headlights that the designers says have been inspired by the London Eye.
