VW has announced the first details of the new generation of its best-selling Tiguan model over its final test drives: In its third generation with plug-in hybrid drive, the new Tiguan will achieve electric ranges of up to 100 kilometres.
In addition, AC charging will become faster in all eHybrid versions and DC fast charging will be available as standard for the first time, according to VW. However, Volkswagen does not yet give concrete values for the new charging options or the performance data of the PHEV drive itself. The 100 kilometres are the only known value.
In the Tiguan generation now being phased out, a 1.4-litre petrol engine (115 kW) was still combined with an 85 kW electric motor in the eHybrid to produce a 180 kW drive. The 13 kWh battery is currently sufficient for around 50 kilometres according to WLTP. If there are no efficiency leaps in the new PHEV drive, a battery in the range of 25 kWh would therefore have to be installed.
In one respect, the upcoming Tiguan will be inspired by the ID models, as VW is already revealing: the classic automatic gear selector in the centre console will be omitted, and instead the driving positions will be controlled via a steering column lever to the right of the steering wheel. A DSG is also always fitted in the other drive versions of the Tiguan; as already reported in 2021, the manual gearbox will no longer be offered.
The world premiere of the new VW Tiguan is scheduled for autumn 2023, with market launch next year. As is known, the Tiguan based on the MQB evo will not be purely electric, but an electric SUV of this size (below the ID.4) is nevertheless being planned: from 2026, as reported, a new purely electric model will be produced at VW’s main plant in Wolfsburg, which will be roughly the size of today’s Tiguan and will be based on the Group’s advanced MEB+ modular system.
