New Volkswagen Virtus sedan to premiere on 8 March
Lately, there had been a lot of talk about Volkswagen’s upcoming premium mid-sized sedan in India but details about the car’s debut seemed to evade us. Well, that has changed now because the German automaker has finally shared a debut date for this upcoming sedan in India: the new Volkswagen Virtus will premiere on 8 March, 2022. Set to finally replace the VW Vento, the Virtus sedan is expected to become available for retail in India in May 2022. However, we must admit the carmaker is yet to confirm Volkswagen Virtus’ launch date in India. Anyway, enough with the introductions; let us now move on and check out what we know about this upcoming sedan in India.
VW Virtus, which will face competition from cars such as Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, etc., will be underpinned by the made-for-India MQB A0 IN platform. The model, a facelifted iteration of the sedan already available for sale in South America since 2018, has been spotted on test runs here plenty of times already. Based on the spy shots we have seen, the upcoming VW car will come sporting twin-pod headlamps, lean grille, five-spoke alloy wheels, etc.
Much like the platform, the VW Virtus will also share a lot of bits and pieces in the cabin with the Skoda Slavia. However, the list of features will be similar to that of the VW Taigun SUV; so expect the upcoming VW sedan’s list of features to include automatic climate control, fully digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, etc.
Another point of similarity between the VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Taigun will be the engine and transmission options. VW will offer the Virtus sedan with a choice between a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.0-litre motor belts out 113 bhp and 178 Nm, whereas the 1.5-litre unit makes 148 bhp and 250 Nm. We believe the transmission options will include a six-speed manual gearbox as standard across the entire range. The 1.0-litre engine, however, will likely also get the option of a six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the the 1.5-litre engine could also be made available with the option of a seven-speed DSG.
