New Volkswagen Amarok Priced for SA
Built on the same line and platform as the current-generation Ford Ranger in South Africa, Volkswagen has finally slapped its new Amarok with a price tag.
The new Amarok will officially go on sale locally on March 18 and will be available in single and double cab guises in base, Life, Style, PanAmericana and range-topping Aventura trim levels.
Before we get to the pricing, it’s worth noting that the new Amarok is 96 mm longer than its forebear, with an overall length of 5,350 mm. It also has a wheelbase stretched by a further 173 mm for an increased room. Its wading depth has also increased to 800 mm from the previous model’s 500 mm. As for the payload, it is rated at up to 1.16 tonnes, while its load bed can take a load of up to 500 kg.
In terms of looks, the Amarok features a bold new design further complemented by concisely integrated standard LED headlights across all models; the PanAmericana and Aventura models upgrade to IQLight LED headlights. Offered as standard from the Life model and above are LED fog lights.
Depending on the trim specified, the Amarok can be fitted with tyres from 16” up to 21”, and, for the first time, the bakkie is sold with ex-factory all-terrain tyres for 17 and 18” alloy wheels.
Moving inside, the Amarok boasts a digital cockpit with a table-style infotainment system in 10 or 12”.
The Amarok is powered by four turbocharged diesel engines, a 2.0 TDI with 110 kW and 350 Nm, and a 2.0 TDI that pumps 125 kW and 405 Nm. A 2.0 TDI BiTurbo unit produces 154 kW and 500 Nm, while the range-topping 3.0 TDI V6 churns out 184 kW and 600 Nm.
If the engines look familiar, it’s because they are the same powering the Ford Ranger variants.
Depending on the model, the Amarok can be had with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic or a 10-speed automatic shared with the Ranger.
The first-gen Amarok has been on sale in South Africa since 2010, and over 830,000 units have found homes across the globe, while 42,450 were sold in the local market. This is enough to place the Amarok towards the top of the sales charts, where the Ranger, Hilux, and Isuzu models battle it out monthly. It will be interesting to watch how the new Amarok measures up when it officially goes on sale in March.
The pricing for the single cab will be announced before its official on-sale date, planned for the second quarter of the year.
