Skoda has given us a new look at the updated Scala family hatchback
After a series of spy shots, the revised Scala will be fully revealed on 1 August, Skoda has confirmed. The Scala will gain enhanced technology and a redesigned exterior in the hopes of standing out in the C-segment hatchback market.
We’ve seen camouflaged versions of the Scala testing, but these official drawings from Skoda give us our best look yet at the upcoming design changes.
At the front there are slimmer headlights with a new LED signature within. The front bumper has also been restyled with angular lines for a more aggressive look. Changes have also come to the rear with a “more refined graphic design” for the rear lights and body-coloured lower section. New wheels will be made available for the updated Scala as well.
Skoda hasn’t said what changes the new car will feature over the outgoing version but it’s likely that it’ll retain the 8.0-inch and 9.2-inch infotainment system options. The entry-level Scala’s 6.5-inch screen could, however, be dropped from the line-up.
We’ve seen inside a Skoda Scala prototype previously and indications are that we could see a slightly reshaped dashboard – but the instruments and steering wheel looked identical to the current car. It’s likely Skoda will also update the upholstery to keep the cabin looking fresh.
The engine line-up shouldn’t change over the current model. The Scala is offered with a range of 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines, all of which now also power the newer Fabia supermini, so it seems likely that Skoda won’t kill off any of those. But don’t expect hybrid power to join the Scala range – like the Fabia it sits on the brand’s MQB A0 platform.
The cheapest Scala will feature a 94bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, above which there’ll be a 114bhp version of the same motor. At the top of the line-up, there’ll be a 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol option.
Volkswagen is still launching plenty of new cars and vans with diesel power so expect that to remain an option on the Scala range. Expect to see the same 114bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine as the current car, and should be offered with either a manual or an automatic gearbox.
