MG looks set to offer a family-hatch sized electric car with new a MG4 nameplate
MG has teased a new all-electric entry for its UK line-up, which will be revealed towards the end of 2022. Though unconfirmed the vehicle is anticipated to take on the name MG4, according to data on the brand’s UK website.
This would suggest that it will be a hatchback one size up from the brand’s MG3 supermini. However, MG has already confirmed the size of the vehicle, at 4.3 metres in length. This would place the MG4 into competition with family hatchbacks the size of the latest Volkswagen Golf. It would mean that, given the all-electric powertrain, the MG4 would be a direct rival for cars like the Volkswagen ID.3, Citroen e-C4 and the upcoming Peugeot e-308.
No technical specifications have been alluded to, but its dimensions overlap with the new ZS, so it’s possible that the MG4 will leverage the same platform, battery and electric motor technology as the brand’s budget electric SUV. MG has just updated the ZS with a significant facelift including new batteries, with a new long-range version of the car using a 73kWh cell capable of 273 miles on a single charge, according to WLTP certification.
The teaser does hint at some of the styling on offer though. The side skirts with chunky black plastic cladding hint that the MG 4 could be an elevated hatch akin to the ID.3, rather than a lower-riding, more conventional car akin to a combustion engined family hatchback, as is the case with Peugeot’s all-electric e-308.
The rear end design signals that the MG4 will usher in a totally new design language, with a new full-width LED taillight bar curling around the tailgate, not too dissimilar to the design used on the Kia EV6.
Interestingly, MG says that the new car has been “developed with the UK consumer in mind.” The brand’s UK strategy means that some electric models like the Marvel R SUV are available in Europe, but not here. The MG4 is all but certain to receive a pan-European launch though.
Further details will be provided closer to the car’s reveal, which will take place in Q4 2022.
