Peugeot is planning a big shakeup of its range, including a new all-electric Peugeot e-3008
- New e-3008 will be brand’s first ground-up EV
- Range could be as high as 440 miles
- Due to arrive by 2025
Peugeot has revealed the details of its ‘E-Lion’ electrification project, which is set to be spearheaded by a new all-electric replacement for the Peugeot 3008 SUV. The rumoured-to-be-called Peugeot e-3008 is set to be joined by another electric SUV, as well the previously announced e-308 and e-308 SW estate, as well as a plug-in version of the new Peugeot 408 fastback.
Set to arrive before the end of 2025, the new Peugeot e-3008 will be the French marque’s first ever ground-up electric car. Utilising parent company Stellantis’ all-new STLA-Medium architecture, the e-3008 will be available with several powertrain configurations, including a dual-motor model offering all-wheel-drive.
The STLA platform is also set to be utilised by an upcoming all-electric version of the Vauxhall Manta, which is expected to be revived as a sleek coupe-SUV. The Peugeot e-3008 on the other hand, will maintain its family SUV proportions and could possibly have a range of up to 440 miles, thanks to its state-of-the-art underpinnings.
At this stage, it’s unknown what the new model will look like; promotional images for the E-Lion project do, however, show five cars sporting Peuegot’s trademark ‘claw-effect’ headlights, as well as illuminated versions of the brand’s new shield logo, hinting at what’s to come.
Thanks to Peugeot’s recent Inception concept car, we do have an idea of what the next generation of the French brand’s interiors could look like. An evolution of the current i-Cockpit setup, future Peugeots are set to get ‘Hypersquare’ yoke-like steering wheels, sitting below a high-definition ‘Halo Cluster’ display. Touch-sensitive panels will allow drivers to configure the car’s settings while the rest of the cabin will be dressed in eco-friendly and recycled materials, as part of Peugeot’s bid to become carbon-neutral by 2038.
So, what about the other SUV? Well, this is likely to come in the form of an electric version of the Peugeot 5008 seven-seater SUV, likely to be dubbed the e-5008. This will instead utilise Stellantis’ STLA-Large platform and is expected to arrive sometime after the more mainstream e-3008.
Less far away is the aforementioned Peugeot e-308 and its SW estate sibling, which are predicted to go on sale sometime in the first half of 2023. Both will be followed up by an electric version of the Peugeot 408, with all three utilising the firm’s current-generation EMP2 underpinnings. Powered by a 156bhp electric motor and 54kWh battery, we expect the plug-in Peugeot 308 to have a range of around 250 miles – with the larger 408 achieving slightly less with the same setup.
What does this mean for car buyers?
The Peugeot range is set to undergo a huge shakeup in the next few years, which is representative of the car industry as a whole. Heading towards the middle of the decade, you can expect many popular and beloved models to be axed or undergo electrification. Either way, the transition to a new generation of EVs can only be a good thing for car buyers, with greater ranges and faster charging expected, as well as, hopefully, more affordable models to open up electric motoring to everyone.
