The new Peugeot 208 is now for sale in South Africa, starting at R289,900.
The hatch is available in one of four options – with performance, features, and looks setting them apart.
Starting at the front, the new 208 receives a wider front grille, two-tone headlamps, restyled fog lamps, and “fang effect” daytime running lights.
“The new face of the 208 has been contoured and sharpened for stronger definition, the effect enhanced by an eye-catching grille now fully integrated into the bodywork,” said Peugeot.
From the sides, the range-topping GT line gets black mirror covers and black wheel arches, while each trim gets its own wheel design that ranges between 15 and 17-inches.
Two spoilers are available, too, along with three “claw effect” tail lights.
Features
On the inside, the new 208 comes with the third-generation i-Cockpit system, a compact steering wheel, and the world’s first production 3D-Digital heads-up display, said the company.
Situated on the dash is a touchscreen infotainment display that varies between 7 and 10-inches, depending on the trim, while the seats are available “in a choice of premium materials with handsome topstitching”.
Connectivity is covered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while “retro-look” switches handle the rest of the features.
The vehicle will also be able to read road signs and markings – including stop, one way, no overtaking, and speed limit signs – and lane keep assist keeps the 208 in the middle of the road.
If the vehicle senses that driver inputs are deviating from road markings, a driver attention alert will then kick in and warn the driver via audio and visual warnings.
Standard safety features also include hill start assist and active safety brake, while a rear-view camera and park assist sensors make it easier to get into a parking spot.
All these features combined result in a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating for the new Peugeot 208.
Performance
Each derivative of the new 208 is powered by a 1.2-litre motor mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
The entry-level Active trim generates 55kW from the naturally-aspirated motor, while the Allure spec pumps this up to 74kW with the addition of a turbocharger.
The top-of-the-line GT model then produces 96kW.
No official torque figures have been made available by Peugeot.
