Toyota has launched a new limited-edition version of its best-selling Hilux in South Africa known as the Raider X.
The new bakkie is available in both manual and automatic specifications, with prices starting at R674,800 and R704,000, respectively.
The Raider nameplate has been a firm favourite with local motorists for several years thanks to its “jack of all trades” nature, as Toyota puts it, so a special model bearing its name comes as no surprise.
This is what you can expect from the new Toyota Hilux Raider X in South Africa.
What you get
The biggest change to the Raider X is a slew of cosmetic details meant to give it a unique road presence.
It features a chrome grille inset with Hilux badging, large matte-black wheel arch cladding with red inserts, black side steps, a matte-black styling bar, an integrated tonneau cover over the load box which itself gets a rubberized coating, and 17-inch alloy wheels with a unique design.
“Raider X” badges can be found in various spots on the doors, tailgate, and interior, and buyers have a choice of paint schemes including Arizona Red, Attitude Black, Chromium Silver, Cosmic Blue, Glacier White, Graphite Grey, Orange Metallic, Oxide Bronze, Platinum White Pearl, and Sand Beige.
Apart from the visual enhancements, the double cab boasts all the same equipment as the standard Raider, as well as the same foundation.
Buyers can expect automatic headlights, LED foglamps, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, four speakers, USB and 12V sockets, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and an infotainment screen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Toyota Connect is another hallmark of the Hilux and offers live navigation, in-car WiFi, and GPS tracking with real-time roadside assistance via a smartphone app.
On the performance front, the Japanese bakkie’s 2.4-litre, turbocharged diesel engine provides 110kW and 400Nm, which links to the part-time four-wheel drive system via either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
This lends the Toyota a fuel consumption of 7.6l to 7.7l/100km and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg. It also has a ground clearance of 286mm, a water wading depth of 700mm, and a payload capacity of up to 830kg.
Each purchase of a new Raider X is completed with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000km service plan.
