The current-generation Audi A3 range receives its performance flagship in the form of an all-new RS 3 Sportback making its global debut today. Much like the base A3 from which it is derived, the RS 3 owes its basic architecture to the Volkswagen Group’s ubiquitous MQB modular transverse platform that underpins, among others, the Volkswagen Golf 7. Immediate benefit of this platform is that the RS 3 now weighs 55kg less than its predecessor.
It is, however, not merely a Golf GTI or Golf R wearing an Audi badge. Instead of the 2.0-litre EA888 seen in the Golf’s performance flagships, under the RS 3’s hood is Audi’s 2.5-litre five-cylinder TFSI engine from the TT generating 367hp and 465Nm. The engine’s already pleasant soundtrack can be further enhanced by an optional sport exhaust system.
Fitted with the 7-speed S-tronic dual clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive as standard, the RS 3 hits 0-100kph in 4.3 seconds and, with its 250kph limiter removed, is able to reach a maximum speed of 280kph. In the NEDC, it consumes just 8.1 l/100km, with CO2 emissions of 189 g/km. More useful to know in day-to-day driving is that the RS 3 takes just 4.1 seconds to accelerate from 60 to 100kph in fourth gear; in fifth, it’ll dash from 80 to 120kph in 5.8 seconds.
Deriving its body configuration from the five-door A3 Sportback, the RS 3 sits 25mm closer to the road and operates bespoke chassis components such as its front axle pivot bearings, steering, and sports suspension with optional magnetic adaptive dampers. Carbon fibre-ceramic front discs are also available as options.
Central to the RS3’s handling prowess is its permanent all-wheel drive system operating on an electronically-controlled but hydraulically-actuated multi-plate clutch. Mounted at the rear axle to improve the RS 3’s weight distribution, the system is able to route anywhere between 50 and 100% of drive torque to the rear wheels. According to Audi, the system is calibrated to allow for controlled drifts around bends, with traction then sent to the front axle to straighten the car.
