Ford has unveiled the new Ranger FX4, which brings with it a new style and new connectivity features.
This Ranger is based on the popular single turbo XLT double cab, and debuts the new FordPass connect system.
This system will be a standard fitment on the XL, XLS, XLT, Wildtrak, and Ranger Raptor models from now going forward, said the company.
The new FX4 loosely follows in the footsteps of the outgoing, limited-edition Thunder range – as it is a distinctive model aimed at “discerning, lifestyle-oriented customers”.
New look
The FX4 offers exclusive styling elements that differentiate it from the rest of the Ranger line-up.
Up front it receives the black mesh grille from the Thunder, and it is fitted with LED headlights and distinctive daytime running lights.
Black mirrors and door handles are added to the list, and black, 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard.
The loading bed was not left untouched, either, and it received a drop-in bedliner and an FX4-exclusive sports bar – with extended legs that make the bakkie stand out further.
FX4 branding can then be found around the vehicle, while five colour choices are available when ordering – Sea Grey, Frozen White, Race Red, Agate Black, and Moondust Silver.
New features
As standard, the Ranger FX4 is fitted with a soft-touch, leather-trimmed dashboard, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, and leather seats with an embossed FX4 logo.
Red stitching adds a sporty element to the cabin.
A SYNC3 infotainment system is also installed, which provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and an 8-inch touchscreen.

FordPass Connect was highlighted as a standout feature of the bakkie, and consists of an app that is paired with your vehicle and lets you control several functions remotely.
This includes locking and unlocking the doors, activating climate control, finding the vehicle’s location, and reading fuel and oil levels.
FordPass also allows drivers to search for available parking, find Ford dealers, schedule service appointments, keep track of services, view the vehicle’s warranty information, and request roadside assistance for the first three years.
This system will now be standard on the XL, XLS, XLT, Wildtrak, and Ranger Raptor models – and has been developed to work on older models from as far back as 2017.
Performance
Every Ranger FX4 is fitted with the 2.0-litre, turbocharged, diesel engine that is currently fitted on the XLT range.
This engine produces 132kW of power and 420Nm of torque, and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
In addition, a Progressive Range Select feature allows the driver to lock out certain gears to gain greater control in specific situations.
This combination allows it a combined fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km, according to Ford.
The new Ranger FX4 can be specified in either a 4×2 or a 4×4 drivetrain, with both models offering an electronic differential lock as standard.
Safety features on the FX4 include traction control, hill launch assist, roll-over mitigation, adaptive load control, trailer sway control, and emergency brake assist.

South African pricing for the new Ranger FX4 is as follows:

All Ranger models come standard with Ford Protect, which offers a 4-year/120,000km comprehensive warranty, 3-year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance, and 6-year/90,000km service plan.
