The car's name combine its total displacement and number of cylinders with the GTS acronym.
It’s been almost a year since the first-ever Ferrari to wield a V6 made its debut in the form of the 296 GTB as the latest evolution of the two-seater Berlinetta.
Making its debut now is the GTS version or Gran Turismo Spider in full. Like its coupe companion, it packs a hybrid-assisted 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with 610 kW and 740 Nm of torque morphed to the rear axle via an 8-speed DCT and E-Diff.
The 122 kW hybrid setup enables the Ferrari supercar to travel up to 25 km on battery power alone while the top speed in full-electric mode is capped at 135 km/h, thanks to a 7.45 kWh battery pack. With both setups at work, the Ferarri GTS completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds with the top speed kicking in at 330 km/h.
Unlike the GTB, the Ferrari GTS features a retractable hardtop that opens and closes in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45 km/h.
For better aerodynamics, the GTS is fitted with a LaFerrari-inspired active spoiler that is integrated into the rear bumper and allows for a maximum downforce of 360 kg at 250 km/h with the Assetto Fiorano package.
The package requires the redesign of the standard basic structure including the door panel, resulting in an overall weight-saving of 8 kg. Also, as part of the package, buyers can get a special livery inspired by the 250 Le Mans as well as Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R high performance tyres which are especially suited for track use because of their grip.
It rides on a set of 245/35 ZR 20 J9.0 rubbers in the front and 305/35 ZR 20 J11.0 at the rear axle. These house brakes that measure 398x223x38 mm and 360x233x32 mm at the front and rear respectively.
The 296 GTS borrows largely from the GTB and comes fitted with a completely digital interface, exclusive Italian leather trim on the seats and aerodynamic flaps integrated into the rear trim structure to reduce buffetting and increase comfort during open-top driving.
The new Ferrari 296 GTB is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the third quarter of the year and that will likely be followed by the GTS.
