The next-generation BMW X1 will be available in all-electric iX1 guise
- New X1 due later in 2022
- iX1 to get blue detailing
- 250-mile range likely
BMW has released teaser images of its forthcoming iX1, the fully electric version of the next generation X1. The all-new compact crossover is due to make its debut later this year, with the EV model following around a year later.
As you can see, the X1 will get a larger version of BMW’s famous kidney grilles, although for the iX1 they’ll be blanked out and lined with blue accents. Blocky lower air intakes will also get blue detailing, as will BMW logos on the nose and tailgate. A new headlight design will feature too.
With the BMW X2 acting as the sporty coupe version, it’s expected that the X1 will take on a more traditional SUV look inspired by the larger BMW X3 and BMW X5 models. That said, it’s unlikely to look quite as rectangular as the Mercedes GLB, which has to accommodate a seven-seat layout. BMW hasn’t given any clues as to whether the new X1 will also be available with three rows of seats, but it’s a possibility following the demise of the seven-seat 2 Series Gran Tourer MPV.
It’s highly likely that the X1 will share its interior with the newly launched BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This means it will get the same curved screen set-up that combines a digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen. All cars will feature Apple CarPlay, cruise control and parking sensors.
Engines will be carried over from the current car; the entry-level model will get a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine shared with the MINI line-up. A more powerful 189bhp petrol, badged 20i, will also be offered, and both these engines should return 40mpg or so. The current 18d and 20d diesel versions should continue to be available, perhaps with mild-hybrid technology to reduce their emissions.
The electric iX1 is only part of BMW’s zero-emission push. Electric 5 Series and 7 Series models are also in development, and all may use the same 282bhp electric motor that’s be deployed in the BMW iX3 SUV. The iX1 will have a smaller battery, though, but fast-charging should be standard. A plug-in hybrid X1 xDrive25eis also likel to be offered, as it is now for the current model.
