Audi has introduced a new, diesel-powered derivative into their SQ7 and SQ8 SUV ranges.
These large S models are now for sale in South Africa as part of a limited, once-off TDI engine launch opportunity.
Performance
The new 4.0-litre V8 diesel engine in the SUVs is the most powerful diesel engine currently available from Audi – and produces 310kW and 900Nm of torque.
This means that both of these large SUVs will reach the 100km/h milestone in 4.8 seconds – with a limited top speed of 250km/h.
Depending on the optional equipment, the SQ7 TDI can then achieve a claimed combined fuel consumption of 8.7l/100km, while the SQ8 TDI comes in at 8.3l/100km.
Power is sent to all four wheels through the permanent Quattro all-wheel-drive system, and an automatic 8-speed gearbox manages the power delivery.
Torque is split at a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axle, but – depending on grip – this can be diverted to 70% at the front or a maximum of 85% at the rear.
Furthermore, both SUVs are fitted with adaptive air suspension which can change the ride height by up to 90mm – and four-wheel steering is available as an optional extra.
As standard, both the SQ7 and SQ8 sit on 21-inch Audi sport wheels with branded red brake calipers.
Features and equipment
Once inside, the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 open up sizeable cabins with Valcona leather sports seats.
A heating function is then given to the front seats, and both also get memory position functions.
Several dashboard and detail inlays are made of brushed aluminium, and illuminated door and sill trims can be found on every model that leaves the factory.
In terms of connectivity, Audi’s MMI control system integrates two large displays into the centre control stack from where several settings such as entertainment, navigation, and air-conditioning can be adjusted through touch inputs.
As another level of control, Apple Carplay and Android Auto is enabled – and the S models also receive a natural language voice input option.
The standard Audi virtual cockpit plus sees an entirely digital instrument cluster integrated behind the multifunction steering wheel – and can be personalised to show several different sets of information.
To further cover any needs that may arise, wireless charging pads have been placed in the front of the cabin, and a 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system provides a premium audio experience.
Audi connect comes standard with the MMI infotainment system that these vehicles have, and offers features such as personalized drive settings for up to six drivers, and predictive information on factors such as weather, traffic, and even parking availability.
Driver assist systems
Active and passive safety systems in the SQ7 and SQ8 SUVs consist of the Audi pre-sense basic package.
This package sports several features, and includes adaptive cruise control which even works after an extended stand still.
Another system warns the driver when it is not necessary to be pressing their foot on the pedal, and – once the driver complies – the transmission will engage freewheeling mode in order to improve fuel efficiency as much as possible.
If all else fails, the Audi connect app will contact an Audi call centre or emergency services in case such a situation arises.

The SQ7 and SQ8 TDI are officially available for sale in South Africa in limited numbers as part of a once-off launch opportunity.
