The prototype seems to have dropped some camouflage compared to its previous sightings.
The next-generation BMW X2 has been spotted again, this time offering a closer look at its base model, with a reduced amount of camouflage compared to the previous sighting earlier this year.
Like the prototype we first saw last year, the BMW X2 retains its swoopy roofline – a deviation from the outgoing model. With fewer concealments come a clearer view of the X2's redesigned grille, which has a shape resembling the XM's but a new triangular mesh design. Interestingly, BMW engineers employ a bit of humor with camouflage wrap as the prototype appears to be smiling at the camera because of the cutouts on the wrap.

Compared to the M35i spotted last time, this supposed base model appears to have a different front fascia. One of the key differences is the new patterns for both the upper and lower grilles, as well as a redesigned bumper. The headlights appear similar, though we can't be too sure due to the covered areas.
The rear end confirms the prototype's base model status due to the lack of quad-exhaust pipes seen in the higher variants. The coupe SUV form is also evident, resembling the X4, while the taillights appear to be the production version, albeit still concealed by the swirly wraps.

The next-gen X2 will likely adopt the X1's powertrain setup, so the revised turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine should provide 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The hotter M35i variant will have more than the old model's range-topper and is expected to gain the 312-hp 2.0-liter turbo motor from the X1 M35i.
What we're sure of, however, is that the new X2 will be bigger than its predecessor. Dr. Nicolai Martin, BMW's Senior Vice President Driving Experience, previously admitted to CarBuzz, “Customers complained that it was smaller than an X1 but was more expensive,” also telling us this will be positioned more as a mini-XM rather than an X1 variant.
No debut date has been set for the X2 yet, though we're expecting a launch by the end of the year. An all-electric iX2 is also expected to debut, built alongside its ICE counterpart.
