A revised version of the BMW X2 SUV is coming in 2023 with swoopy styling, plus petrol and electric powertrains
- Petrol, diesel, hybrid and full-electric powertrains
- Swooping coupe-SUV silhouette
- Due to arrive during 2023
A second-generation version of the BMW X2 SUV is set to debut later in 2023. Thanks to our latest spy photographs, we can confirm this new model will debut swoopy coupe-SUV styling – similar to the larger BMW X4 – and will also be available in petrol and fully-electric iX2 forms.
Expected to arrive sometime before the end of the year, the new BMW X2 and its plug-in counterpart will share many of its parts with and shall also offer a more stylish alternative to the BMW X1 and iX1 respectively. Other premium rivals will include the Volvo XC40 and C40, Mercedes GLA and EQA, plus the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback.
At the front, it’s possible to see clear similarities with the new X1 and iX1, such as the angular LED daytime running lights and enlarged kidney grille. However, while the X1 – and to a certain extent the first-generation X2 – take on a more-traditional boxy SUV silhouette, the new X2 will be more akin to the larger BMW X6, with a svelte coupe-like shape.
On the inside we can expect to see the same infotainment setup as the new X1; this features BMW’s latest iDrive OS8 infotainment system, comprising a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, mounted alongside a 10.7-inch touchscreen in an arrangement BMW calls the ‘Curved Panel’.
Strip away the swooping bodywork and the new X2 and iX2 will be almost identical to their X1 and iX1 cousins. Like the X1, the combustion-engined X2 will be offered with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
While we don’t expect a sporty M-badged model anytime soon, the most powerful variants of the new X2 at launch are likely to be a pair of plug-in hybrids, badged 25e and 30e. When equipped with either of these powertrains, the equivalent X1 produces 242bhp and 322bhp respectively, with the latter X2 30e getting from 0-62mph in under six seconds.
Those looking to cut their Benefit-in-Kind company car tax bills or make the switch to electric power will be most interested in the upcoming BMW iX2. Bar a few model-specific badges and the lack of a set of exhaust pipes, this will look identical to its combustion-engined counterparts and will be powered by the same dual-motor, 64.7kWh battery setup as the iX1.
Thanks to its slinkier shape, the new BMW iX2 should be more aerodynamic than the boxier iX1 and could offer a greater range as a result. With a substantial 309bhp at its disposal, BMW claims the iX1 can manage 272 miles on a single charge – we expect the iX2 will be able to manage over 280 miles before needing to be plugged in. Of course, like the iX1, the iX2 will come as standard with 130kW rapid charging, allowing for a 10-80% top-up in under half an hour.
As is often the case with coupe-SUVs, their added desirability means they tend to cost more than their traditional SUV counterparts; the BMW X1 and iX1 start from circa £34,000 and £52,000 respectively, so expect the X2 and iX2 to cost a few thousand pounds more. Exact pricing and specifications are likely to be released shortly after both cars are officially revealed.
