BMW has unveiled the new M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive, a roofless, four-wheel-drive variant of the M4 Competition Coupe.
The car sports a “panel bow” soft-top convertible roof that can be put up or down in 18 seconds, at speeds of up to 50km/h.
The fabric top sheds 40% of the weight of the previous-generation’s metal folding roof, and boot capacity is improved by 80 litres compared to the outgoing model.
Performance
The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible puts out 375kW and 650Nm from a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine.
Power is given to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and three shift programs, alongside the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with active M differential.
According to BMW, the drivetrain has a rear wheel bias, and can be driven in four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive Sport, or rear-wheel-drive only modes.
This body style also gets a model-specific chassis setup for extra rigidity and handling prowess, and adaptive M suspension assures low body roll – with two settings for pedal feel and response.
Putting this all together, the M4 Competition Convertible sprints to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds – 0.2 seconds quicker than its rear-wheel-drive-only siblings.
Features
The new M4 Competition Convertible mirrors the cabins of its related BMW models, with full leather upholstery, large infotainment displays, and M-exclusive details.
An M Mode button on the steering wheel enables customised drive settings, M Sport seats with Merino leather are fitted as standard, and M-specific operation buttons allow direct control over dynamic settings for the engine, chassis, and steering.
Standard equipment then includes:
- Navigation
- Ambient lighting
- Three-zone climate control
- BMW Live Cockpit Professional
- BMW Intelligent personal assistant
BMW adds that an extensive selection of drive assistance systems are available as optional extras, in order to “boost long-distance comfort and safety”.
This includes steering and lane control assistant, active navigation with emergency lane assist, and a parking assistant with cameras.
BMW said the car is coming to the country in Q4 2021.
The South African pricing for the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive has not been confirmed as yet.
