BMW M V8 with PHEV power (2023) 750-PS-M-Hybrid for the new M5 & Co.
M GmbH is working on a new top engine for the M5, for example. It should be a plug-in hybrid for the first time – with a lot of power and electric range (around 50 km). But first of all it should do service in a pure M-model. Of the XM, so the name, will be a kind of luxury runabout with SUV elements.
In his last Markus Flasch has an interview as M boss at auto motor und sport made it clear that with all-electric hard-core M models, the “new class” can only be expected from 2025 at the earliest. For a long time, it was believed that the Garching company would leave out the plug-in hybrid as an intermediate step, in contrast to the competition at AMG. Now Flasch made it clear that “a high-performance hybrid” should not be long in coming – and that “there will definitely be an independent M model again” but will probably not be on the market until 2023.

First for your own M model – but what kind of one?
The outgoing M boss just wanted to reveal what kind of car the independent M model will be: We also want to “retain customers who are into expressive luxury. With the M8 and its derivatives, that is partly true successful, but there is a segment in which there is a lot going on and in which we are not yet represented. ” Some speculate that the new “high-performance hybrid” will power a large SUV coupé based on the X7, which could well be called the X8. BMW has protected the designation X8 M from a long period of time. On November 18, however, BMW announced the XM Concept with an Instagram photo – after all, the new M model should have no equivalent in the civilian BMW models. Super strong SUVs (coupes) are indeed booming and models such as the Lamborghini Urus or Audi RS Q8, the Aston Martin DBX or the upcoming Ferrari Puro Sangue would also fit the label “expressive luxury”. In fact, our Erlkönig photographer closed SUVs in X7 dimensions with a flatter rear end on the Nordschleife, on the door of which it says “Hybrid-Test-Vehicle”. The model name XM, which has now been confirmed, points to both elements according to the classic BMW nomenclature: X for SUV, M for a model from m GmbH. The independent one should also extend to a flatter body layout. At least that’s what the first teaser photo suggests.
An M7 or a successor to the M1 with a V8 hybrid?
Such a model could close a numerically long existing gap in the M GmbH portfolio: The Garching-based company has not yet had a real M7 in its range, the M8 Gran Coupé is still a bit removed from luxury in terms of space, especially in the rear. The boom in luxury limousines in markets that are important for M GmbH, as can be seen in the success of Maybach, from which Audi was animated to listen to China, cannot leave the Munich-based company unmoved. However, such models are not particularly sporty and therefore do not really fit the profile of BMW M – the XM could combine both.
The last thing that remains is a competitor for the AMG Project One, the McLaren Artura, Aston Martins Valkyrie or the Ferrari SF90 Stradale – they are always “expressive” and luxury meets at least in terms of necessity and price. However, that was done with the XM concept – at least initially. But one should never say “never”. Finally, such a model allows a bridge to be built as well return to Daytona scheduled for 2023 with a car according to LMDh prototype regulations – with hybrid drive.

That’s why Markus Flasch also says: The high-performance hybrid “would also be conceivable for the next M5, technology from long-distance racing for our long-distance road models, so to speak”. In fact, the super sporty business sedan has been known for the highest mileage in the M program for years. And then a hybrid would still play out its range advantages over an easily similar dynamically conceivable electric model for a long time to come. A successor to the M5 is also not expected until 2023 at the earliest. In the current model, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 has so far been used, as is also known from the X5 M and X6 M. Incidentally, its basic construction remains the same. However, major revisions have to make the unit suitable for the Euro 7 emissions standard. According to Markus Flasch, this should succeed without water injection.
Open charging and hybrid concept
For a modification of the V8, the usual suspicious components such as mixture preparation and cylinder head come into question, but also innards such as pistons or crankshaft and of course the turbocharger. BMW was the first to rely on a hot V. In other words: The exhaust side of the cylinder heads faces inwards, where the two turbochargers can also be found. Why? Because the developers can shape the exhaust manifold in this way in such a way that they can combine the exhaust gas flows of the individual cylinders across banks. So you only have to consider the firing order. This is because it determines the timing of the exhaust gas pressure in the individual cylinders. The exhaust gas that drives the charger escapes the combustion chambers in a pulsating manner following the four cycles. So that high pressure does not fizzle out during the exhaust stroke of one cylinder in the direction of the exhaust manifold pipe part of another cylinder in which there is currently no or lower exhaust gas pressure, the cylinders must be united in a duct that tapers towards the turbo blades. When the loader shovels are driven, the exhaust gas flows combine in such a way that their pressure curves do not conflict. Optimized drive of the loader even at low speeds ensures better responsiveness of the loader even at low speeds and a correspondingly faster torque build-up.

BMW has been packing the turbocharger between the cylinder banks of the V8 (hot V) since 2008.
