BMW’s new-generation 7 Series flagship sedan takes shape ahead of official reveal in April
The seventh-generation 2022 BMW 7 Series has been teased by the German car-maker ahead of its world debut at the Beijing motor show in April.
A handful of renders released by BMW give us an idea of the styling and technology expected from the forthcoming G70-series luxury sedan flagship which is due to reach Australian showrooms in the second half of this year.
As ever, the front-end design of the 7 Series is punctuated by BMW’s polarising kidney grille – this time illuminated and flanked by dual-element headlights and daytime running lights in something of a real-world execution of the BMW Concept XM from late 2021.
Luxury and opulence is the name of the game in the large executive sedan class. So, not surprisingly, it’s a pretty lavish spread inside the new-generation 7 Series.
There’s multiple screens, including a mammoth 31-inch roof-mounted unit providing rear seat passenger with a cinema-like experience, intricate faux jewel detailing, extravagant lighting plus novel features such as gesture control and voice activation.
It’s also safe to expect the arrival of Level 3 self-driving technology – at this point as an option and against a minefield of legislation and red tape.
Based on the same CLAR platform that underpins the current 7 Series, the newcomer will go without a V12 option, but will likely offer petrol and diesel engines plus an electric i7 variant claimed to output 480kW and offer a driving range of up to 610km.
“The new BMW 7 Series is absolutely trailblazing in every respect,” said BMW’s R&D chief Frank Weber.
“Like no other model, the BMW 7 Series stands for BMW’s innovative strength. The all-electric BMW i7 is also the most powerful BMW 7 Series. It combines the best driving experience with the ultimate digital experience.
“This makes it the ideal vehicle for forward-thinking, responsible decision-makers and avant-garde pioneers.”
