The Ferrari Purosangue 2023 is still being tested. The Italian brand’s specialists are continuing to traverse the main highways surrounding the Maranello headquarters with a fleet of prototypes, as shown in these spy photographs, a setup that will endure until mid-2022.
In 2022, the Prancing Horse has a fantastic year ahead of it. Its new model development department is fully staffed, as evidenced by prototypes of several models that have been tested in recent months. The Ferrari Purosangue 2023 is one of the most popular models, and it is the one that will usher in a new era in the Italian brand’s history with the world premiere of the SUV.
Some acronyms irritate him, and they prefer to refer to it as FUV instead. In reality, the famous “Frankestein” mules were already aiming for a model with a lower body height than current off-road vehicles. And, while the Purosangue will feature air suspension and many driving modes, including one for off-road driving, it will not be much higher than what you see in these spy photographs.
The Purosangue has constrained dimensions, with the passenger compartment situated well behind the front axle as a weight-balancing technical solution. Despite being hidden twice, the obvious fastback silhouette inherited from the GTC4 Lusso is also evident.
The manufacturing body is coated in vinyl sheets and has elements that distort the lines and details of the artwork beneath the canvas. Despite this, the Italian brand’s models have exceptionally low headlights and LED daytime running lights installed in supplementary air intakes to the central grille.
Although there are several remarkable elements, the maker is envious of the final design, particularly at the back. A more contoured section can be seen just above the lights, implying that it may have an integrated spoiler, and an aperture below it, curiously, pointing to the third brake light. However, if you look closely, you can see a few of tubes under the deck in the rear bumper’s middle section.
It’s a little feature to emphasize the range’s sportiness, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it in any of the models.
The Purosangue (roughly translated: thoroughbred) denotes a turning point: late Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne had long rejected an off-roader, saying in 2016 when asked about a Ferrari SUV, “You have to shoot me first.”
When he delivered the company’s second-quarter financial results to investors in August 2017, he made his new attitude known. The quote remained unchanged. Marchionne, on the other hand, presented it in a different light. If Ferrari enters the market with an SUV identical to BMW’s, Bentley’s, or Porsche’s, he should be shot.
SUVs and Ferraris do not mix.
The terms “Ferrari” and “SUV” did not go together for the new Ferrari chief, Louis Camillerie.
According to Camillerie, he was first hesitant, but the notion eventually won him over. Finally, he declares himself to be a strong backer of the idea. After all, it will widen the client base, particularly in China, where the well-heeled admire the brand but no longer fantasize about owning a sports vehicle. Due to the rivalry from Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley, as well as Maserati, SUV versions have boosted sales. With the Cullinan, even the luxury brand Rolls-Royce offers an SUV.
The Maserati Levante SUV, which has been on the market since 2016, is the basis for the Ferrari Purosangue.
It is, however, built on the revolutionary front-mid-engine design, with a V6 turbo engine mounted well behind the front axle and driving all four wheels through a dual-clutch transmission mounted on the back axle. For the hybrid system, there is also an electric motor. Customers may get the Purosangue without the hybrid drive if they like. The system should be similar to that of the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso, with a six-cylinder engine, transaxle gearbox, and transversely locked rear-wheel drive.
Formula 1’s turbo technology
For the new turbo engine, Ferrari has patented a novel turbo arrangement. This is based on the Formula 1 configuration. A turbine connected to a generator in the exhaust system is meant to transform the exhaust energy into electricity.
A buffer battery then feeds the power to an electrically operated compressor on the intake side. The Italians want to avoid turbo lag by doing so. Because the turbine on the exhaust side is also built as a type of valve, the system should sound no worse than a V8 or V12.
Maserati should be involved in the development of the hybrid system, as well as the cockpit design with modern electronics, head-up display, and infotainment. Thanks to diverse materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum, the Ferrari SUV embodies the current trend of lightweight construction.
The new platform also offers for more flexibility in terms of alignment. The placements of the V6 and electric motors, as well as the transmission, are fixed, but the wheelbase, like the number of seats and vehicle height, is customizable. So two-seater, two-plus-two-seater, and four-seater Purosangue are all possible. A early sketch of the new front-engined four-wheel-drive platform shows the silhouette of a Ferrari.
They aren’t showcasing the new Ferrari SUV yet, but they are heading in the right direction. The new vehicle will be more coupé-like in design and will be smaller than the Lamborghini Urus, which is almost five meters long and two meters wide. The first Erlkönig photographs of the Purosangue, which auto-motor-und-sport.de can present exclusively, corroborate this.
The four-door is nevertheless tightly disguised and has a bit higher ground clearance than the coupé. The roof abruptly slopes backwards, ending in a roof edge spoiler with a third brake light. The back window is tiny, but the tailgate has a wide hole. The lights are visible through the flap.
The back view has a large diffuser and double-flow tailpipes, albeit the exhaust system in these photos does not yet conform to the series design. On the other hand, the wheel arches have a lot of flare and there are a lot of beads on the side. The bow handles on the doors are traditional. Through the open glass, a portion of the cockpit cover can be seen.
In this photo gallery, you can view the rivals in the luxury SUV market.
Ferrari is now part of the mix. For a long time, the brand with the rising horse was able to avoid the SUV boom; today, with a model, they are joining the ranks of luxury SUVs – albeit Ferrari is not following the martial mega-SUV route. You may make a more delicate SUV coupé with the Purosangue.
