Mitsubishi Outlander Arrives: A Sharp Contender in Adventure SUV Class
In recent years, Mitsubishi hasn't been the most influential brand in SA. To remedy this, the Japanese carmaker has decided that it's time to bring a new adventure SUV to our roads, and it has just arrived.
The Outlander is the newest SUV model from Mitsubishi, and it looks promising. Unveiled in Japan last year, the Outlander is earning accolades in every market it has entered. So, naturally, there must be something special to it…
At its heart
Beginning with the heart of the Outlander, let's dive into what powers this SUV. It's equipped with Mitsubishi's well-designed 2.5-litre engine that incorporates dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology. This engine is quite capable, delivering a respectable output of 135 kW and a torque figure of 245 Nm. Accompanying it is an 8-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
The Outlander also has several selectable drive modes, including Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud. These modes will adjust the SUV's shifting patterns and change the throttle sensitivity to give it the best traction possible. Additionally, there is a cruise control feature available for longer journeys.
The look
Apparently, the design team based its inspiration on the concept of I-Fu-Do-Do when creating the Outlander. It roughly translates to 'Authentic and Majestic'. From our quarters, at least, we think it looks authentic. As for the Majestic aspect, maybe that's not the first word that comes to mind. It surely is bold, especially at the front. With its blackened grill and chrome accents, the big front end and sleek LED headlights will allow this car to stand out in traffic.
The long side profile uses intricate shapes, especially towards the tail end. The tail end is relatively soft for our tastebuds but mixes well with the overall design. The 20'' alloy wheels are a nice touch but are not the go-to choice for an off-road vehicle.
Mitsubishi is fond of its new cabin design, claiming to use premium materials and soft-touch surfaces to create a luxurious interior. There is a 12.3'' infotainment screen sporting the usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Outlander has seven seats, three-zone climate control and a six-speaker sound system.
Ownership nits and grits
Two variants of the Outlander will hit the local market. The first, the GLS, is priced at R729,995, serving as your entry-level model. Its features include keyless operation, front and rear park distance control, a rear-view camera, and heated synthetic leather and suede seating.
The higher-end Aspire, costing R759,995, enhances the experience with leather power-adjustable seats and a panoramic sunroof.
The Outlander comes with a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, 5-year unlimited kilos roadside assistance and a 5-year/90,000 km service plan.
No easy space to share
This new SUV model from Mitsubishi is a refreshing retake from a brand that, with the mere mention of its name, once upon a time excited anyone with even a drop of petrol in their veins.
It looks good, but it will be up against stiff competition in the form of the upcoming Subaru Outback and relatively new Nissan X-Trail. Let the age-old battle of these Japanese titans commence, albeit in a more grown-up form.
