Since March 2001, Mitsubishi has started selling the Mitsubishi Airtrek in Asia. It has been detected on the North American continent since May 2003. It’s known as the Outlander in Europe. The new model of the SUV from the Japanese automaker is presently on display at the Guangzhou Auto Show.
Model that is entirely powered by electricity
The new Airtrek is based on the “e-cruising SUV” idea. Electric (vehicle), extension (the pleasures of life with a car), and expressiveness were three essential terms in the creation of the SUV.
Mitsubishi has created the new Airtrek particularly for the Chinese market on a totally electric platform, and it will debut in China as the company’s fourth model before the end of the year.
The Airtrek’s electric motor depends on a 70 kWh battery housed in the vehicle floor, which should provide a range of 520 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTC standard. Under the hood, the electric motor, inverter, and reduction gear are all housed in one unit. The Japanese have yet to provide any performance information. However, 135 kW is reported in Chinese media (184 PS).
The Airtrek sports a redesigned radiator grille and a modified front apron, as opposed to the Outlander, which we are familiar with. The Airtrek’s shape is also based on a redesigned window line. With the rising lower window line, the roof slants slightly to the rear, creating a triangle window in front of the C-pillar.
More dynamism is also created by the increasing body corrugations on the sides. The Airtrek sports a new smooth flap and Y-shaped rear lights in the rear perspective. The apron has also been modified, with tailpipes removed.
The Airtrek has a total of five seats in two rows on the inside.
The driver can utilize a huge touchscreen on the dashboard as an extra operational level while looking at a digital cockpit.
Mitsubishi is introducing a fully electric SUV in China with the new Airtrek. It looks a lot like the Outlander, except it stands on an electric platform. The distance covered is listed as 520 kilometers.
The GAC is a group of people that work together to The Airtrek is presented by Mitsubishi Motors Company (GMMC), a joint venture between Mitsubishi and the Chinese GAC company. The electric SUV makes its debut today, November 19th, at Auto Guangzhou’s press day.
According to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, the car’s battery will last for roughly 520 kilometers (CLTC). The electric motor, converter, and reduction gear are all housed in a single unit that is designed to be lightweight and compact. Mitsubishi did not disclose any information on the drive’s durability.
“We think the brand new Airtrek will help widen the horizons of customers in China, where environmental measures are advancing with new energy vehicles, particularly electric cars,” said Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato. That doesn’t sound like a car designed for the international market.
According to InsideEVs.com, the automobile is only the fourth Mitsubishi model sold in China. The models ASX, Pajero, Eclipse Cross, and Eupheme are included on the Wikipedia article for GAC Mitsubishi, but not the Airtrek. The Eupheme is a tiny SUV based on the 4.34 meter long Trumpchi GE 3 – Trumpchi is a GAC Group brand – and the first three are also well-known in this nation.
Since the i-MiEV died in 2016, Mitsubishi hasn’t had an electric car on the market in Europe. The Outlander with plug-in hybrid drive, which is part of the Renault-Nissan partnership, is the brand’s pride and joy, with the current version having an electric range of 87 kilometers.
Mitsubishi will, after all, continue to do so in Europe. Mitsubishi declared in the summer of 2020 that it would no longer be bringing any new models to the European market since the company was not viable.
However, the plug-in hybrid version of the Eclipse Cross hit the market soon after, and we were assured during the March 2021 driving event that it will most likely continue.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV took an unusual route. It has now been unveiled for Japan, where it will be available by the end of 2021. When will he be in Germany? It is expected to be completed in 2022. Then there’s the fact that this is the fourth Outlander premiere of the year.
The first was the regular model, which was followed by an improved hybrid model from the previous generation, and lastly, just a few weeks ago, the next-generation design.
Now that Mitsubishi has released additional information regarding the Outlander PHEV, key details such as power and torque are still missing.
Thanks to a next-generation PHEV system that employs two electric motors and is powered by a 20 kWh battery, the Nissan Rogue-based SUV can drive 87 kilometers on all-electric power. Although we don’t have specific performance figures, Mitsubishi claims that the electric motor’s power will be enhanced by roughly 40%, giving the SUV its long range.
