Sam Bird finishes second in opening race of weekend doubleheader.
Simon GallowayMitch Evans became the ABB FIA Formula E season’s second two-time winner with a victory Saturday in the first race of a Berlin E-Prix weekend doubleheader.
Evans shared the podium with Jaguar TCS Racing teammate Sam Bird, as the two recorded Jaguar’s first 1-2 finish in the series. Maxillan Gunther of Maserati MSG Racing completed the podium in third.
The 43-lap race, which featured 190 overtakes and a series record 23 at-the-line lead changes, was the seventh in the 16-race Formula E season.
Back-to-back victories have Mitch Evans in the thick of the Formula E points chase.

Evans started ninth on the grid and made it all the way to the top step on the podium for the second consecutive race.
“The last race (in Brazil) was special having us both on the podium and also with Nick (Cassidy)—all Jaguar powertrains—on the podium. At this one, it’s extra special because it’s a 1-2 for the team and a really hard race to manage. It got a bit chaotic out there. I wasn’t expecting a victory in this place. This place has haunted me for many years. So super happy to get a second win, but here it was unexpected.
“It’s full credit to everyone. Sam drove really well. He’s been quick all day. I was surprised to get in the front bunch so early. There was a lot of games being played out there and it was hard to manage but we got it done.”
Points leader Pascal Wehrlein, who also has two wins this season, started 15th, and made up huge ground before slipping to ninth late. Out of sight, the TAG Heuer Porsche driver made up good ground on the final lap to finish sixth.
Wehrlein heads into Round 8 on Sunday in Berlin with a series-leading 94 points. Cassidy now sits second with 71. Jean-Eric Vergne is third with 66 points and surging Evans is now fourth with 64.
