MG Motor India sold 4,008 units of its cars in May 2022. This is an almost 100 percent increase when compared to the sales figures for April 2022 and a nearly 300 percent growth compared to the sales in May 2021. According to MG, the growth can be attributed to an improvement in the availability of chips.
The Indian automotive market is among the largest in the world. Being among the largest markets in the world comes with its fair share of complications and challenges. MG Motor India seems to have got everything just right in the Indian market. The products launched by MG in India speak volumes of just how the brand has positioned its cars very well. The entry-level MG model in India is the MG Astor which has a starting price of Rs 10.28 lakh ex-showroom. It boasts the latest in technology and even gets AI assistance, ADAS, etc.
Then comes the MG Hector and its sub-variants including the 6 and 7-seater Hector Plus. MG is one of the few brands in the country to have a proper mass-production electric SUV in its portfolio. The MG ZX EV boasts a 50.3kWh battery pack and a claimed range of 461 kilometres, which was the highest range for any EV in India at the time of its launch.
Finally, MG also retails a premium full-size SUV in the form of the MG Gloster. It is larger than its rivals and also boasts a higher power output. The flagship Gloster also features ADAS features that work like a charm even on Indian highways.
MG Motor entered the Indian market only in 2019 and has quickly ramped up production and sales to cater to Indian customers’ needs. It is also one of the few manufacturers to only have SUVs on sale in India. With this, MG Motor seems to be catering to exactly what Indian buyers need.
In addition to this, the chip shortage faced by the industry seems to be fading away slowly but surely. This has reflected in just how many units MG Motor India has sold in the recent past. In May 2021, MG Motor India sold 1,016 units and this could be blamed on the aftereffects of the pandemic-induced lockdowns.
Things soon improved and MG India started selling more cars. In April 2022, the brand sold 2,008 units. In May though, things accelerated pretty quick and MG sold 4,008 units. This is 99.6 percent month-on-month growth. Compared to the May 2021 sales, it is a year-on-year growth of 294.5 percent!
