Taking note of the affordable electric vehicle segment’s growth in the United Kingdom, the British Motoring brand Morris Garages recently released a teaser for its upcoming mass-market EV. The company in a recent tweet shared a snippet of the vehicle getting slowly uncovered from a sheet with a description revealing the dimension and launch period of the car. As per the tweet, the upcoming all-electric vehicle from MG has been developed by keeping the British customer in mind and will be launching in the last quarter of this year. The company also revealed that the new EV will measure at 4,300 mm.
According to the MG UK website, this teased model could take the name of MG4. While in the video released by the company we spot an orange mid-size vehicle with a few highlight features like the 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, chunky black plastic cladding, a set of sharp LED taillamps, bold shoulder lines along with blacked out ORVMs and roof.
Apart from this information the company did not reveal any further technical details about the MG4, but as the vehicle is dimensionally similar to the ZS EV – the company’s current budget EV in UK, we can assume that this new vehicle will utilize the same platform, battery and electric motor technology. MG recently gave the ZS EV a notable facelift in the United Kingdom in which the SUV got new batteries, with a new long-range version of the car using a 73kWh cell capable of 273 miles on a single charge, according to WLTP certification.

The upcoming MG4 which as of now seems to be an elevated hatchback should be rivalling the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, Citroen e-C4 and the upcoming Peugeot e-308 in the United Kingdom. The company also mentioned earlier has designed the vehicle by keeping in mind the British consumer, using a totally different design approach than the company’s current lineup. Additionally, the recent tweet also includes the hashtag MGElectricforall suggesting that the company is aiming for a bigger audience in the UK by making this upcoming EV more affordable.
Reportedly, MG conducted extensive global market research for the development of the MG4 and according to reports, the brand benchmarked the Volkswagen ID.3 that MG’s parent SAIC Motor also manufactures as part of a joint venture with Volkswagen in China. The company with the launch of this new vehicle is looking to expand its reach in Europe by exporting around 1,20,000 vehicles per year.
As of now there no reports suggesting that the MG4 will be making its way into the Indian subcontinent but as last year Rajeev Chaba, President and MD of MG Motor India said that an affordable EV from the brand is likely in the cards for India, we can be hopeful. If launched in India, we can expect the company to bring this new EV with a 61.1 kWh battery pack powering an electric motor that generates a maximum output of 154 bhp and 260 Nm of torque. We can also expect the range to be around the 400 km mark with a single full charge.
